2025-2026 Reno Winter Guide: Festivals, Holidays, Local Events, Nearby Destinations & More

If you ever get a chance to make it out to Dry Creek Pond Trail in the winter, it will be one of the most stunning scenes you'll ever witness.

Howdy friends,

I genuinely cannot believe I am here writing my 2025 2026 winter guide… SERIOUSLY. It feels like just yesterday I was out licking icicles, making honey/maple syrup taffy on fresh snow, freezing my arse off, eating it on the slopes, catching snowflakes on my tongue, getting high off Christmas trees scents, and getting dazzled by every holiday light and display in sight... basically overdosing on holiday & seasonal magic.  And what gets me every single year is how the magic never fades, no matter how many times this cycle repeats.

Fall is officially over around December 21-22, but for the sake of convenience & the holidays, I will transfer over any December events & happenings from my fall guide over to this winter guide.

Side note: I’ve been getting the biggest kick out of watching people spiral over the possibility of not getting enough snow this year for winter sports and activities. Would it make a difference to let you know that I’m one of those people? LOL. Keep those snow dances coming, friends.

If you know anything about me, you know I am completely obsessed with the everyday magic of life. Now imagine that obsession multiplied during the holidays. One of the wildest mindsets I have ever come across is when people say they are bored or say that Reno sucks. This post is not about proving anyone wrong. It is about shining a light on all the events, experiences, attractions, and small joys they may be overlooking.  Once you open your eyes and lean into exploration and opening your mind to different perspectives, you may start to realize that there's more magic in life than you ever imagined.

At any time during the winter season, you may come across carolers spreading cheer with their lovely voices, acts of kindness, neighbors going all out in transforming their homes into breathtaking Christmas scenes, and restaurants enticing us with delectable holiday offerings.  Not to mention the pop-up shops, holiday vibes, atmosphere, excitement & buzz, one of a kind activities & experiences, cozy fire pits, and the community that contribute a great deal in all of this magic.

As if Reno weren't enough, our neighboring towns - Lake Tahoe, Sparks, Carson City, Genoa, Truckee, & Virginia City (to name a few) are all part of the same festive club, collectively elevating the holiday spirit to its grandest.

Below, I’ve put together a list of holiday activities and events happenings in and around Reno. You’ll find a mix of exciting new events and beloved traditions to help you plan the most wonderful holiday season.  This guide is here to help you soak up as much holiday magic as possible… just try not to lick any metal poles this year on a dare because I am not coming to rescue you. (Just in case you really get into trouble, just wait a moment and the ice will eventually start melting.  Don't ask how I know this, LOL. If you end up ripping your tongue a little anyway, just know that it's one of the fastest healing parts of the body. Double LOL).

Whether you prefer staying in town or venturing out to nearby areas, you will discover an abundance of activities to enjoy, both near or far.  You just may end up finding yourself overwhelmed with so much to do and so little time to conquer it all.  I know...good problems.

Wishing you and your loved ones a holiday season packed with joy, excitement, and plenty of fond memories.

P.S. Follow me on Instagram @lovingreno775 for more gems, events, & happenings that not have not yet made it onto the blog.

There's still plenty to pull from my fall guide.  You can access it HERE.

Notes

Guide Updates: I will continue updating this guide throughout the season as new events & information pop up.

Suggestions Welcome: If you notice any missing from my lists or would like to recommend places, events, or experiences, please feel free to reach out. You can message me on Instagram or email @lovingreno775@gmail.com.

Ticket Availability: When it comes to events, secure your tickets as early as possible as they tend to sell out quickly.

Arrival Tips: To ensure a smoother experience, consider arriving early to events. This not only helps with finding good parking spots but also minimizes wait times.

Winter Advisory:  Snow may come as early as the end of October.  Check out my winter travel guide to stay on top of hazardous weather conditions.  Also, days & nights in fall can get super chilly.  Stay on top of hourly weather to dress appropriately for your outings.

Maximizing Your Holiday Season: Tips for a Memorable Celebration

*Book events/purchase tickets as soon as possible as many of them sell out fast

*Arrive to events early to avoid traffic/lines + land good parking

Pie Love

Big shout out to Colton & Chef Jason of Silver State Pie Co. for making extraordinary pies & sharing them with the community.  Seriously, find these humans a.s.a.p. & try out their outrageously delicious sweet & savory pies.

P.S.  They always have a vegetarian/vegan option on hand.

Low Calorie/Low Sugar/High Protein Drinks at
ALPINE NUTRITION

I have to give mad props to this business, as it's run by one of the kindest and most hardworking families who, I’m certain, are inspiring the community. If you look closely, you’ll see that they not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. Usually, people associate healthier alternatives to more calorie dense drinks with being nasty, but nope... not in this case.

P.S.  Ask these guys for some workout tips while out on a food run.  They know their way around the gym.

RAD Local Coffee Shops to Help Fuel your Holidays
Old World Coffee Roasters always does a fun and festive holiday menu.

We’re so lucky to have so many amazing and unique local coffee shops that add so much character to our city. These places are run by passionate people who genuinely love what they do and aim to brighten your day. With all the different styles and flavors to choose from, I can’t help but feel spoiled. Honestly, can you imagine our city being taken over by faceless coffee chains?   Sounds like a freaking Twilight Zone episode to me.

Support Local & Celebrate Community

I love showcasing local businesses.  It’s one of my favorite things to write about here on the blog.

Why support local?

Because these businesses are run by our neighbors, friends, and family. These are people pouring their hearts into what they do, creating amazing, unique products and services that add so much character to our community.  Not to mention the fact of how they keep more money in the community and contribute/donate more to local causes.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky to meet some truly inspiring business owners. They’re bold, brave, and proof that following your dreams is always worth it. Honestly, they inspire me to keep chasing my own dreams every single day. Sure, life can feel terrifying sometimes, especially when paving your own.  It isn’t exactly easy. But when you follow what’s in your heart, you'll find that there’s no other way to live.

How We Can Help
Drop some love for these dreamers.
-Follow their pages (most can be found on Instagram).
-Help spread the word to friends and family.
-Leave reviews + drop a kind comment.  It all helps.

If you have a favorite local spot or an incredible experience with a small business, I’d love to hear about it. Connect with me on Instagram so we can celebrate the people who make our community an amazing place to call home.  When we support local, we’re really supporting each other. ❤️

Broadway Show
*Location:
Pioneer Center
100 S Virginia St, Reno, NV 89501
*My POST about Stereophonic

"The most Tony Award-winning Show of the year. The most Tony Award-nominated Play of all time. Stereophonic mines the agony and the ecstasy of creation as it zooms in on a music studio in 1976. Here, an up-and-coming rock band recording a new album finds itself suddenly on the cusp of superstardom. The ensuing pressures could spark their breakup — or their breakthrough. Written by David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and featuring original music by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, Stereophonic invites the audience to immerse themselves — with fly-on-the-wall intimacy — in the powder keg process of a band on the brink of blowing up.

Stereophonic is recommended for ages 13 and up. The play contains simulated drug use and adult topics. The run time is 3 hours, including a 15-minute intermission."

Buttcracker Neverland
*Location:
Bruka Theater
99 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89501

"Reno, NV -   THE BÜTTCRACKER is back at Brüka as we celebrate the holidays with this original parody of the classic Nutcracker and twist it into a cross between Peter Pan and Dancing With The Stars.  A “Celebrity” Panel of “Experts” votes for the winners.  opening Friday, December 5 through Sunday, December 21, 2025.  What began as a parody of The Nutcracker has evolved into a regional cult classic, offering a unique underbelly to the original ballet each year it is performed. Not for ballet purists or those with tight slippers.  Recommended:  12 years and up.  Get your tickets early!

THE STORY:  For your holiday titillations, an all-original BÜTTCRACKER mashes the classic story of Peter Pan with the television hit Dancing with the Stars and literally walks the plank in this strange and hilarious new theme!   Brükaisms abound in this 13th rendition, which is more of a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride than a “tighten your toe shoes to the music” kind of experience."

*I compiled some of my favorite songs from each group on YouTube HERE.  Check the list out.

It’s not every night you get to see Living LegendsThe Grouch, and CunninLynguists in one place, and if you grew up listening to them like I did, your stoke levels are probably off the charts right now. These artists helped define the underground hip-hop scene in the ’90s and early 2000s, operating completely outside the mainstream but with a massive, loyal following. Living Legends are legends for a reason.  They built their career on real talk, DIY hustle, and raw talent. The Grouch, a founding member, has always brought introspective, honest rhymes that hit deep. And the CunninLynguists & their clever lyricism, soulful production, and thoughtful storytelling pushed the boundaries of what independent rap could be. Together, on stage in Reno, it’s going to be a full circle moment celebrating their legacy, impact, and the community that’s carried them for decades.

*TICKETS ($5)

Did you know the BLC has its very own version of SNL, filmed live in front of an audience?! I grew up loving SNL, so I had to check out Y Not's first episode last in October. Let me just say that comedians are some of my favorite people in the world, and our local comics went all out on their debut: totally unhinged, off the rails, and absolutely nailing it with laughs. Comedians are smart, bold, and remind us to loosen up and embrace our true selves. Space at the theater is extremely limited, so be sure to snag tickets early if you plan to catch the show.

"BREAKING NEWS 🚨:
Carson City is about to be violently caffeinated in the best way possible — because the absolute icons of caffeinated chaos, Compound Coffee, are coming to Home for the Holidays. 🤯🔥

I’ve been watching their pop-ups all over Reno like an over-caffeinated FBI agent, dying to try them… and now they’re finally bringing their insane flavors, box-head swagger, and pure espresso GREMLIN ENERGY straight into our market.

Their drinks?
Art.
Their vibe?
Chaos but make it couture.
Their energy?
Enough to send Santa into cardiac arrest. 🎅⚡️

If you catch me shaking like a chihuahua in a snowstorm — mind your business. That’s just the LOVE GALORE and a FERXXO151 tag-teaming my bloodstream.

Carson City… it’s time.
December 20th • 11–3
Come ready. Come hungry. Come unhinged.
Because Compound Coffee is about to wake up the whole damn town. 🎄🔥☕️"

Carson City

Carson City has so much going for itself. First of all, it’s Nevada’s capital, our state government was born and still operates here, which means it’s packed with history, character, and culture. The city is full of beautiful structures in a variety of styles: Victorian, Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, and more. There are so many fun traditions (a few of which I’ll list below), and perhaps my favorite part of all, pure Nevada pride.

On top of that, Carson City has breathtaking mountain and alpine views and sits conveniently between Reno and South Lake Tahoe. You’ll find some of the cheapest gas around, hot springs, awesome museums, some of the nicest locals, and so much more.

I’ll never forget taking my friends from out of town to the Silver and Snowflakes tree lighting at the Capitol Building one year. I distinctly remember them shouting, “Now this is Christmas!” as they hopped on a free sleigh ride, snowflakes falling on their heads, with local school choirs singing carols and lighting up the entire scene with holiday cheer.

I LOVE Carson City, and I know you will too.

Truckee

Website

O Truckee… this little town  sits snuggly alongside Highway 80, only 40 minutes from Reno, and it features off the charts views and vibes that always put a huge goofy smile on my face. You know that feeling when you're standing in front of a waterfall, instantly happier for no logical reason whatsoever? That is exactly how I feel about Truckee.

Even though it is practically a tourist attraction with boutique shops and pricier than average dining, I will always make the trip just to be surrounded by the views, the vibes, and the history of the place. The main strip is adorbs, the events are genuinely epic, the building are straight out of a storybook. Plus, a train and river that run through town, creating an aesthetic that really feels like it's out of a dream.  And the ski resorts... 7 within 7-13 miles to be exact, and Donner Lake, which is a whole adventure of its own.  It's almost rude how perfect this place is.

Incline Village

Website | Website

I cannot even count how many times I have driven up to Incline Village, sometimes on autopilot, almost like something is calling me back for adventure and fresh air. One of the best parts about living in Reno is how close we are to towns with their own scenery and magic, and Incline Village is one that always feels special the moment you arrive. Towering pine trees, the deep blue shimmer of Lake Tahoe, peaceful small town charm, local cafes, lakefront paths, hidden beaches, snow covered trails, and community events all make this area feel warm, welcoming, and naturally beautiful. It's much calmer than South Lake and offers a strong community, a touch of prestige, and endless things to do from Sand Harbor to Lakeshore Drive. Christmas Lights & Displays

A fun and festive holiday activity that is guaranteed to lift your spirits is exploring holiday decorations and light displays around town. The best part is it is basically free entertainment.

Bundle up, pile everyone into the car, grab your favorite hot drinks, and dive into a holiday tradition that is all about making memories.

The spots listed below are some of my absolute favorites to visit every year. For an extra touch of seasonal magic, tune into a Christmas radio station and let the holiday soundtrack carry you through the lights and festive cheer.

My Favorite house in Hidden Valley 7115 Pebble Beach Drive. (They did not participate in 2023).

Hidden Valley Parade of Lights Contest enjoys its 43rd year.

"With such pleasant fall weather, some of our neighbors have started decorating their homes with holiday lights. Displays will run from just after Thanksgiving and finish on New Year’s Day.

The Parade of Lights contest includes awards for the top ten homes and best street. Yard signs are placed by the judges to indicate the results, and awards are delivered on January 1st, when the signs are retrieved."

-Description from website

*I love Hidden Valley's Parade of Lights.  Find many decorated houses in one neighborhood. Check out their archive to see lists of winners from past competitions.

Tip: You can add up to 9 points of interest on Google Maps at a time.

1st Place – 113 Mia Vista Ct.
2nd Place – 4930 West Hidden Valley Dr.
3rd Place – 2308 Tamarisk Dr.
4th Place – 2084 Tamarisk Dr.
5th Place – 5665 East Hidden Valley Dr.
6th Place – 3995 Sleepy Hollow Dr.
7th Place – 2445 Tamarisk Dr.
8th Place – 3330 Penfield Circle
9th Place – 5560 St. Andrews Dr.
10th Place – 5655 East Hidden Valley Dr.

SAFETY
Please drive cautiously and be vigilant for both children and adults. The neighborhood can be quite dark at night due to the absence of ambient light in the area. Given that this is a popular attraction, the roads can become congested during peak times (weekends leading up to Christmas). If you need some extra time to take in the sights, be sure to pull over to the side to allow drivers who are following closely to pass safely.

16180 Tanea Drive, Reno, NV 89511

Located next to the South Valleys Library, this display used to go all out with elaborate decorations from top to bottom. Even though it has downsized and now features synchronized lighting, a visit here remains a delightful and eagerly anticipated annual tradition for my family and me.

Must see Nightmare before Christmas Themed House w/ Custom Projections

If I only had time to see one decorated house for the holiday season, it would be this one.  The Britts are the masterminds behind this beyond impressive whimsy scene.  They go as far as traveling to out of state conventions for one of a kind decorations for both Halloween & Christmas.

Tip: Bring a lawn chair and stay a bit to take in the projections. Visit during a weekday or early on weekends to beat the crowds.

The Elves of Wingfield (Synchronized) Christmas Light Show

7450 Ambush Circle, Sparks NV 89436
TUNE INTO 89.9

This is one of the biggest and most well known displays in the area. In October, they host a popular free backyard haunt packed with decorations, scares, and excitement. Their Christmas display is just as fun and impressive as the haunt, but without the scares. Instead, you will find an impressive synchronized display, Santa Claus, tons of excited visitors, and plenty of holiday cheer. Check the flyer for the schedule to see when Santa will be making appearances.

This family contributes so much to the community every year and appreciates every food and monetary donation from the community.

"Mark you calendar! Elves of Wingfield light show will be bigger and brighter than ever this year! We’ve partnered with Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation once again and will be doing photos with Santa on the dates below. A $15 dollar donation to NNCCF will get you a photo with Santa (digital copy). Desert Face Painting will also be here with Santa doing free face painting🎨 Oh and our Santa… he’s the real deal, his image below🎅🎄!!!!
Light show will run every night from November 29th through December 31st. QR codes will be located outside the house for those who cant make the Santa events but wish to donate to this amazing charity that helps local pediatric cancer patients and their families♥️🎗️See attached flyer for Photo with Santa dates and times. Like and follow Elves of Wingfield Facebook page for any updates. Merry Christmas!"

Synchronized Lights + Projections

I love this house because they have custom projections in addition to synchronized lights. Note: Space is limited since it's a corner house right next to a busy intersection.

"It’s that time of the year again! Swing on up to Donner Ski Ranch to cut down your own Christmas tree for the season. Stop by the bar before you head out, and make sure to bring your own saw."

I love this locally owned ski resort. The staff is always so kind, and their restaurant serves amazing food and some tasty homemade pies. In the summer, this is my go to spot to park before heading out to explore the Donner Tunnels.

Snowshoeing Around Reno & Tahoe

Snowshoeing in the Reno-Tahoe area is one of the best ways to enjoy winter without needing technical skills or expensive equipment. Lower elevations closer to Reno sometimes have lighter snowpacks, but once you head up Mt. Rose Highway or toward Lake Tahoe, you’ll usually find deep, consistent snow and beautiful winter scenery. Many trails here are beginner friendly with packed paths, while others offer steeper terrain and longer backcountry style routes for more experienced adventurers.

Best Places to Snowshoe Near Reno

Galena Creek Regional Park
A close to town favorite with easy to moderate trails winding through forested areas. Great for beginners, families, or anyone wanting a peaceful snow day without a long drive.

Thomas Creek Trail/Mount Rose Area
A quiet, moderate trail with forest, creeks, and gentle elevation. It feels remote yet is still easy to reach from Reno.

Chickadee Ridge via Tahoe Meadows
One of the most popular snowshoe outings, known for open meadows, rolling terrain, and incredible views. Often packed down, making it easier for first-timers.

Mount Rose Trail
A more challenging route with steeper sections and bigger alpine scenery. Perfect for those wanting a longer adventure with stunning mountain views.

Spooner Lake/Tahoe Rim Trail/Marlette Lake
Beautiful Tahoe Basin terrain with options that range from mellow lakeside loops to longer, more varied routes that climb into the forested hills.

Where to Get Gear in Reno

Gear Hut Reno
A great local option if you want used or consignment winter gear. They often carry snowshoes, winter clothing, trekking poles, and boots at much lower prices. Inventory changes often, so it’s worth checking regularly.

REI Reno
Reliable for new gear, rentals, and expert help. You can find snowshoes, winter layers, poles, and all the accessories you might need.

Patagonia Outlet
While a larger brand, this outlet remains a popular local stop for outdoor‑gear and clothing, especially for those who want quality gear for Tahoe and the Sierra.

Bobo's Ski & Patio
More specialized, but local: gear for skiing, outdoor living, patio furniture, maybe more outdoor‑lifestyle stuff.  Good if you like Reno’s outdoor & mountain‑lifestyle vibe.

Upload pictures of you and your family into this amazing app and watch yours"elves" transform into hip dancing elves.

I cannot recommend this activity enough.  It's become a tradition for me and my family.  I remember vividly cracking up the first time me and my family generated ourselves into elves using this app.

Explore a world of musical instruments, lessons, and an array of cool stocking stuffer worthy items.

Last year, I purchased a clown whistle, mini ocarina, penny whistles, and a kalimba for myself and my kids.

Renee, the owner, is incredibly friendly, and the western decor, along with folk music playing in the background, creates an atmosphere reminiscent of Frontierland at Disneyland. It's a delightful experience for both music enthusiasts and those seeking unique and fun gifts.

I recommend purchasing instruments from here as well, as Renee possesses extensive knowledge about the best brands in the industry.

A really fun place to shop at Mountain Music Parlor

I could easily spend an entire day exploring the many treasures at the Discovery Museum's store. It's loaded with a wide variety of unique toys, gadgets, and everyday items that make education fun. Making a purchase from our cherished museum contributes to keeping its doors open for generations to come.

If you haven't visited the museum yet, it's an incredible space for individuals of all ages to learn and expand their horizons.

For more details on exhibits, events catering to both adults and children, camps, and workshops, check out their website.

***Admission is not required to shop here.
***Free parking
***Did you know that you can rent out the whole museum for a slumber party?

One of my go-to spots for finding unique gifts from around the world. They offer a diverse selection including instruments, music, bags, clothes, jewelry, books, figurines, and so many other interesting items. You can explore the gift shop without paying admission to the museum, and while you’re there, don’t miss the small exhibit room next door. It’s free and almost always features a new art display.

The Wilbur D. May Museum itself is a treasure trove of amazing artifacts from various corners of the globe. Additionally, they regularly host traveling exhibits (usually January-April) throughout the year, providing both entertaining and educational experiences.

Fausta, the heart and soul of MwintSoph, has been a go to at various farmer's markets throughout the years. A genuinely sweet and generous lady, her warmth and culinary talents have inspired me throughout the years.

She has watched my children, now aged 5, 7, and 9, grow up and has become an extension of our family. My daughter once exclaimed to her, "You're Everywhere!" reflecting on her incredible work ethic, allowing her to be present at so many different locations. It's worth noting that she manages everything as a one-woman show.

Undeniably one of most skilled bakers and cooks, Fausta can whip up delectable treats or cater events with finesse. Whether you're looking to gift her scrumptious treats or looking for someone to cater a special occasion, she's your woman.

Originating from Ghana in Africa, Fausta's expertise extends to African-style cuisine, showcasing her mastery of spices and diverse flavors.

What sets her apart is her commitment to accommodating different dietary needs. From vegan and vegetarian to gluten-free options, Fausta ensures that everyone can savor her creations.

To experience her culinary delights in person, catch Fausta at the Riverside Farmer's Market at Idlewild Park every Sunday from 9 am to 12 pm.

The cherry on top is her pricing.  Her goods are reasonably priced for the quality of goods she delivers.
