Reno Winter Guide 2026 Continued: Seasonal Celebrations, Local Fun, & More

Valentine's Crafting @ The Holland Project | TICKETS

Once upon a time, during the Roman Empire, love was not always encouraged. Emperor Claudius the Second believed single men made better soldiers, so he outlawed marriage for young men, convinced that romance weakened their loyalty to Rome. A priest named Valentine quietly disagreed. He believed love and commitment were sacred, so he continued to marry couples in secret. When his actions were discovered, Valentine was arrested and imprisoned for defying the emperor’s orders.

While imprisoned, legend says Valentine formed a close bond with the jailer’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his execution, he is said to have written her a letter signed “Your Valentine.” Whether fact or folklore, this simple gesture became a lasting symbol, one that echoes all the way to modern day Valentine’s Day.

How much of this story is historical truth and how much has been shaped by time, I do not really know. But what I do know is this. Love has always found a way. Love disrupts. Love persists. And love is something worth celebrating every single day. Love for yourself, for life, for friends and family, for strangers, for those you admire from afar, and even for this shared consciousness that allows us to experience the most powerful feeling we know how to describe as love.

As February approaches, crush gram order forms and Valentine’s Day event flyers begin making their way home with my kids, and it instantly brings me back. Back then, Valentine’s Day felt magical. It was a chance to let Cupid do the dirty work, quietly confessing crushes, discovering unexpected admirers, and experiencing the thrill of connection in its most innocent form.

While the holiday has evolved over time, something tells me we are just as lost today as we have always been throughout history, only a little more groomed, with fancier underwear, better gifts, more chocolate, and a packed calendar of events. LOL.

Even in a world dominated by screens and constant distractions, our most basic human need for connection has not changed.  Valentine’s Day reminds us that a simple gesture of love, whether a note, a smile, or a kind word, can bridge the gap between hearts in ways no screen ever can.

Valentine’s Day remains a time to celebrate love in all its forms, whether that means honoring cherished traditions or creating entirely new ones. There are countless ways to make the day, or even the entire month, feel intentional and meaningful.

And while February often shines a spotlight on couples, love is not exclusive. We are constantly presented with polished, idealized versions of romance. Happy couples, curated moments, picture perfect lives filtered through social media. But real life is far more complex. For many, this season can stir feelings of sadness, whether from heartbreak, loss, loneliness, or simply feeling overlooked during a month saturated with displays of affection.

That is why Valentine’s Day deserves to be redefined. Not as a holiday reserved for romance alone, but as a celebration of love in all its beautiful, imperfect forms. Whether you are single or partnered, this is an opportunity to honor the love you have for yourself, the relationships that ground you, the friendships that sustain you, and even the kindness you extend to strangers. Love is universal. Love is powerful. Above all, love is what keeps the world moving forward.

Whether you are here to discover Valentine’s Day events or simply looking for creative ways to embrace the final stretch of winter, you have come to the right place. I cannot get enough of Reno or the life we are fortunate to live here.  Life is full of beauty and discovery, and in Reno, it truly is something special.

If you haven't already caught on - I LOVE YOU, Reno.  So much that I'd share my last bit of champagne chocolate with you... But don't test me. LOL

Peace, love, and kindness.

=^.^= Kat (meow)

Notes

Follow me on Instagram for more gems, local businesses, and more that have not yet made it onto my blog.

The first part of my winter guide may still helpful for finding local shops, winter activities, and more.

Ticket Availability: When it comes to events, secure your tickets as early as possible as they tend to sell out quickly.

Arrival Tips: To ensure a smoother experience, consider arriving early to events. This not only helps with finding good parking spots but also minimizes wait times.

Winter Advisory: Check out my winter travel guide to stay on top of hazardous weather conditions (especially if you frequently travel in and out of town).  Also, days & nights in fall can get super chilly.  Stay on top of hourly weather (AccuWeather is great) & dress appropriately for outings.

"Reno Taiko Tsurunokai brings the ancient art of Japanese taiko drumming to our community. Traditional taiko drums have been used in warfare, martial arts, religious ceremonies, and festivals throughout Japan for over 1,400 years. The beating of the taiko drum echoes the beating of the heart and the rolling of thunder. The powerful sounds of taiko drums will transport your students on a cultural adventure through Japanese history and customs. Tsurunokai performs traditional Japanese folk music and original compositions. Students will be invited to participate in drumming and dancing during the performance.

Tsurunokai was founded in 1997 by Rieko Shimbo, a Japanese native who studied traditional music and dance in Tokyo before moving to the U.S. Rieko has assembled a group of talented and dedicated taiko drummers whose credits include performances at many local and regional festivals and art exhibitions. She has been teaching and performing in our community for over 25 years and is passionate about introducing people to the rich culture of Japan through the art of taiko."

"Step right up to a charming little chaos. Pretty Little Freak Show is a fearless celebration of femininity, weirdness, and the beauty in being “too much.” Featuring dancers, circus characters, specialty acts, and a cast of unapologetic misfits, this show flips the classic freak-show trope on its head. No damsels. No stereotypes. Just powerful women telling stories through movement, satire, and raw emotion. From dark clowning to tasteful chaos to emotional vulnerability, each act explores a different side of what it means to be a modern femme—messy, magical, and magnificently strange. Pretty. Freaky. Powerful. ⚠️ Show Disclosure Pretty Little Freak Show is rated PG-13. Please note: Some songs contain uncensored lyrics Strobe lighting effects will be used during the performance Guests 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian Viewer discretion is advised."

"Brewery Arts Center invites you to enter a world of imagination. Experience 3D projections dancing across the walls of a 3,000 square foot temporary structure created by The Potentialist Workshop. Words fall short of explaining this breathtaking immersive art exhibition, it truly must be seen to be believed. Bring the whole family to bond over the power of art, the wonder of creativity, and the enchanting glow of LIGHTS.

Staggered entry ensures plenty of space for each party to take in the magic. Once inside you are welcome to stay as long as you like. We recommend planing one hour to explore the House Of Infinite Potential.

The structure has thin walls and an open roof, be sure to dress appropriately for cold weather.

Children (12 and Under) get in free! While there is no charge for the kiddos, we do ask you add free tickets to your cart so we can properly accommodate the size of your group.

Monday February 9th there is no admission charge but we still advise you register in advance."

*Location:
Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts

"The new Hollywood feature film MIMICS is holding its world premiere at the Pioneer Center on February 11th ahead of its national theatrical release. The evening will include a media red carpet with attendance by the stars of the film. After the film screening, the cast and creative team will engage in a live talkback Q&A on our historic stage.

The world premiere of MIMICS is more than a film screening—it’s a once in a lifetime event. Conceived by hometown kids Kristoffer Polaha and Marc Oakley, MIMICS is a true labor of love, made in Reno and about Reno. Delivering fun, fright, and romance, the film tells the story of down-on-his-luck impressionist Sam Reinhold, who makes a dangerous pact with Fergus—a wicked, strings-attached puppet that promises to propel him to stardom, only to unleash a nightmare that threatens the safety of those he loves. Set against the spirit, grit, and personality of Reno, the film brings a deeply personal story back to where it all began.

Be part of the first audience to view MIMICS ahead of its national release!"

Date Night in The Village

*Location:
Heavenly Village
1021 Heavenly Village Way
South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

Heavenly Village is the perfect spot to celebrate Valentine's Day, or really any day you want to make special. Life, atmosphere, views, and charm... the village is definitely one of my favorite places to hang, despite being located in a touristy area.  One big reason - the VIEWS & VIBES are unlike anything else.

Some ideas for an ideal trip: a scenic gondola ride (with or without skis & snowboards, $$$), a delicious dinner & magic show at super vibey The Loftice skating, & live entertainment (Base Camp Pizza has daily performances). And of course, you have plenty of food, drink, & dessert and unique shops to take advantage of.

If you're looking to go all out, staying at the village is an amazing experience. I’ve stayed at Grand Residence Club in the past, and it was unreal. Walking around the village with no time limit made me feel like I was truly on vacation.  Another time, my brother stayed at Marriott’s Timberlodge, and it was just as incredible. Their outdoor communal area pool is so spacious with tons of space to splash around and hang (fire pit and vibes included), plus they’re connected to Fire & Ice Grill, a fun & immersive hibachi buffet-style restaurant. If you want to be right in the heart of all the action, this staycation is for you, with direct access into the village from the back entrance.

Dessert options at the village:

Champagne & Chocolate
The Baked Bear for ice cream sandwiches
Rocket Fizz candy shop
Creative Crepes

Her music transcends genre, conveying an elegant and refreshing sound that is deeply rooted in Soul and enriched by Jazz undertones. The poetic nature of her lyrics lend itself to the folk world, revealing a soundscape of storytelling that is fiercely original."
