| Valentine's Crafting @ The Holland Project | TICKETS |
Once upon a time, during the Roman Empire, love was not always encouraged. Emperor Claudius the Second believed single men made better soldiers, so he outlawed marriage for young men, convinced that romance weakened their loyalty to Rome. A priest named Valentine quietly disagreed. He believed love and commitment were sacred, so he continued to marry couples in secret. When his actions were discovered, Valentine was arrested and imprisoned for defying the emperor’s orders.
While imprisoned, legend says Valentine formed a close bond with the jailer’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his execution, he is said to have written her a letter signed “Your Valentine.” Whether fact or folklore, this simple gesture became a lasting symbol, one that echoes all the way to modern day Valentine’s Day.
How much of this story is historical truth and how much has been shaped by time, I do not really know. But what I do know is this. Love has always found a way. Love disrupts. Love persists. And love is something worth celebrating every single day. Love for yourself, for life, for friends and family, for strangers, for those you admire from afar, and even for this shared consciousness that allows us to experience the most powerful feeling we know how to describe as love.
As February approaches, crush gram order forms and Valentine’s Day event flyers begin making their way home with my kids, and it instantly brings me back. Back then, Valentine’s Day felt magical. It was a chance to let Cupid do the dirty work, quietly confessing crushes, discovering unexpected admirers, and experiencing the thrill of connection in its most innocent form.
While the holiday has evolved over time, something tells me we are just as lost today as we have always been throughout history, only a little more groomed, with fancier underwear, better gifts, more chocolate, and a packed calendar of events. LOL.
Even in a world dominated by screens and constant distractions, our most basic human need for connection has not changed. Valentine’s Day reminds us that a simple gesture of love, whether a note, a smile, or a kind word, can bridge the gap between hearts in ways no screen ever can.
Valentine’s Day remains a time to celebrate love in all its forms, whether that means honoring cherished traditions or creating entirely new ones. There are countless ways to make the day, or even the entire month, feel intentional and meaningful.
And while February often shines a spotlight on couples, love is not exclusive. We are constantly presented with polished, idealized versions of romance. Happy couples, curated moments, picture perfect lives filtered through social media. But real life is far more complex. For many, this season can stir feelings of sadness, whether from heartbreak, loss, loneliness, or simply feeling overlooked during a month saturated with displays of affection.
That is why Valentine’s Day deserves to be redefined. Not as a holiday reserved for romance alone, but as a celebration of love in all its beautiful, imperfect forms. Whether you are single or partnered, this is an opportunity to honor the love you have for yourself, the relationships that ground you, the friendships that sustain you, and even the kindness you extend to strangers. Love is universal. Love is powerful. Above all, love is what keeps the world moving forward.
Whether you are here to discover Valentine’s Day events or simply looking for creative ways to embrace the final stretch of winter, you have come to the right place. I cannot get enough of Reno or the life we are fortunate to live here. Life is full of beauty and discovery, and in Reno, it truly is something special.
If you haven't already caught on - I LOVE YOU, Reno. So much that I'd share my last bit of champagne chocolate with you... But don't test me. LOLNotes
Updates: I’ll be back to fine-tune and update this guide with anything I missed or that pops up later. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s something you’d like me to add.
"Sylvia and Beau find themselves in an English countryside cottage for their yearly rendezvous, and Sylvia knows this time it will be the beginning of their new life together. But when Beau demurs on a shared future, and their spouses arrive at the cottage, she realizes that this home-away-from-home is a refuge for determining a new path forward. With a tip of the hat to Noël Coward and sex comedies of the past, THE COTTAGE offers a perfect showcase for six actors with endless laughs, hilarious twists, daring physical comedy, and a happy ending for lovers everywhere."

The world premiere of MIMICS is more than a film screening—it’s a once in a lifetime event. Conceived by hometown kids Kristoffer Polaha and Marc Oakley, MIMICS is a true labor of love, made in Reno and about Reno. Delivering fun, fright, and romance, the film tells the story of down-on-his-luck impressionist Sam Reinhold, who makes a dangerous pact with Fergus—a wicked, strings-attached puppet that promises to propel him to stardom, only to unleash a nightmare that threatens the safety of those he loves. Set against the spirit, grit, and personality of Reno, the film brings a deeply personal story back to where it all began.
