Now, onto Fall/Halloween - arguably the most epic season/holiday ever. We get to bask in the magic of our imaginations and creativity, pig out and party unapologetically, get buried by pumpkin and apple everything, scare ourselves & others to death without actually dying, witness the best of nature's landscapes, and take ourselves out of our bodies and minds and become someone else for Halloween day, or the whole month, depending on how obsessed you are.
How does any of this make sense? It really doesn't... when I think about it, LOL. Between about 2,000 years of Halloween's evolution, with origins linking back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, an ancient Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest and the start of winter or the “darker half” of the year, and centuries of traditions involving spirits, disguises, mischief and going door to door for food or treats, we somehow ended up here. Now we're living in a seemingly commercial centric time of year where the blurred lines between the living & dead have somehow gotten lost in translation, and what we're left with is just plain fun. I'm not complaining about it one bit.
The beautiful thing about life and the holidays is the meaning your bring to it. There are no requirements and everyone is welcome to celebrate. You can tailor this time of the year according to your needs.
I don't care about the marketing schemes to get us to buy things, or any of that. All I care about is soaking up all of the season's perfect weather, busting out of collection of sweaters, fighting my family over the last bit of fresh local apple cider, eating way too much apple pie, celebrating this uniquely American tradition, & soaking in its magic and all the craziness and action that comes with it, all while priming the kiddos for a lifelong love of Halloween and fall.
One day, they won't need me to take them pumpkin picking, dress them up, carve pumpkins with them, drag them to every Halloween event I can possibly find. Life is bittersweet. I get it. But when the bitter kicks in, I will (hopefully) have zero regrets and fully be prepared for it.
I want the kids to remember what fall felt like. I want them to remember the crisp mornings, the dancing fall leaves on the street, the ridiculous amount of Halloween decorations & movies we watched for the hundreth time, the smell pumpkin pie baking in the oven, the crisp and refreshing apple cider we drank too much of, the excitement of picking out costumes, the spooky movies, the random little traditions we created along the way and, most importantly, how it felt to be a kid during this absolutely magical time of year.
And I want the adults to remember it, too. The years when you bent backwards running around town like a chicken without its head shopping for & diy-ing costumes, planning epic parties, freezing your butts off during chilly Halloween nights, dealing with sugar rushs, getting eaten alive by pumpkin guts, and all the other chaos, laughter, and traditions that came about through it all.
Maybe you want the same thing for you and your family. Or maybe you're looking for that pumpkin patch you haven't been to yet, a spooky event you'll talk about for years, that one place that serves apple cider flights, a beautiful fall hike that stop you in your tracks and makes you feel so good to be alive, or just something fun to do on a random Saturday.
Whatever you are searching for, I aways try my best to share everything I love and think you'll enjoy right here on my blog, while providing some tips & tricks to help maximize the fun and enjoyment.
So welcome to my 2026 Halloween & Fall Guide for Reno. I'm here to help you squeeze every drop out of this season, make some memories, get outside, eat all the seasonal food, find the spooky stuff, embrace the weirdness and maybe, just maybe, remind you that there is so much to celebrate in life.
Let's get outside. Eat the seasonal stuff. Obsess over pumpkin everything (while not paying attention to the pumpkin haters), watch all the spooky movies, find the weird little events, dress up, connect, experience & support community, and create the kind of memories that will stick with us for years to come. After all, it's just a bunch of Hocus Pocus... now let's go and have some fun.

Good to Know: Don't forget to shut off your irrigation system before freezing temps arrive. Bald tires are the worst in wintry road conditions. Discount Tire does free tire air checks - it's helpful to stay on top of fluctuations in air pressure due to temp. changes. And it's always err on the side of caution and always check tire pressure before long road trips. Hand water trees & plants during dry spells. You're more than likely responsible for clearing your sidewalks of snow during snow storms. Check this post out to learn how to prepare your vehicle for winter. And make sure you have a snow shovel on hand before winter starts. If we end up with a gnarly storm, shovels could sell out fast everywhere. Oh, and you'll want quality windshield wipers to increase visibility in rough winter weather. Trust me on this one.

Visit a Farm
Visiting a farm in the fall is mandatory every year. I'm pretty sure many others will agree with me on this one. It's a tradition that just makes the whole season feel complete. The more farms I can squeeze in the season, the better. Each one has its own vibes, offerings, and atmosphere. My Farm Criteria:
*Does the farm feel cozy and welcoming?
*Are there cute animals I can bother (and take way too many pictures of)?
*Is the farm just as obsessed as I am when it comes to offerings - souvenirs, entertainment, seasonal goodies, & little surprises?
*Can it keep my demanding kids entertained without me losing my mind?
*Is there a spot where I can buy a bunch of things I don’t technically need but will 100% make me happy?
*A farm without baked goods can be a deal breaker. Pies, donuts, breads, pantry staples and seasonal offerings are everything.
*And of course, grub. Gotta have something savory to balance out the sugars.

If you're looking for the ultimate farm experience, Bishop Pumpkin Farm just can't be beat, especially for families with little ones 2-9 years old.
When recommending this farm to others, I often describe it as the "Disneyland" of farms. It has a barn store, bake shop centered around all things apple & pumpkin, cookie shop, hot food section, slushie barn, an abundance of play areas for children, including a petting zoo, train, carousel, u-pick pumpkin patch, barn store, pig race show, tubing area, outdoor movie viewing area, and so much more.
-Weekends in October are the busiest. Plan on arriving early or come on a weekday to beat the crowds. You can also visit mid september.
-Parking on weekends is $20, weekdays are free.
-Free admission. Pay per activity. I highly suggest purchasing their unlimited wristband. There are enough attractions on the farm to keep little ones busy for the whole day.
-Value ticket bundles (for weekdays) are slightly discounted and never expire.
-Halloween movies only play during weekends in October

Shoaf's ghost town is charming year round walk through located next to the Sawdust Trails store that my kids (5,7, & 9) have been enjoying for the past several years.
***Note: No live actors or jump scares, just cute spooky scenes to enjoy.
Shoaf's Ghost Town, Sawdust Trails, Virginia City Escape Room, and the kettle corn/ice cream spot are all conveniently placed right next to one another and are owned by the same owner, Brian, who's one super kind and nice guy. The details you'll find at these shops are magnificent. It's apparent that they were all made with love.
This is one of my favorite shooting galleries ever. Its charm is undeniable and you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that some of the objects have sound effects and even move when shot at.

Spirit of Halloween has so many spooky interactive displays that me and my kids can't get enough of every year. The themed displays change every year, making every visit fresh and fun.
Home Depot has really been upping their game with Halloween animatronics these past few years. Talking witches brewing up a storm in their cauldron, zombie barbers, singing Jack Skellingtons, and the most horrifyingly realistic duo of all, Chucky & his bride, Tiffany... It's all good fun.

Are you familiar with escape rooms? If not, allow me to introduce you to my latest obsession. I conquered my first escape room about four years ago and have been hooked ever since. There's truly nothing more exhilarating, exciting, empowering, entertaining, and cooler than escape rooms.
Escape rooms are immersive experiences where you and a group of friends, family, or even strangers get locked in a room to play a game. Your mission is to solve a series of puzzles and "escape" your way out.
Rooms vary by difficulty, but most grant you unlimited hints and truly want you to succeed, so tackling one shouldn't be intimidating.
Lucky for us, Reno has some amazing escape room options, and among them are a few that have become my all-time favorites, having experienced over 55 across San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. The rooms I’m highlighting in this guide are perfect for the Halloween season, featuring spooky and eerie themes.
All October long is Halloweekdays at Deadline! $5 off per player (of teams of 4 or more!) every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Deadline Escape Room's "Dead Silence" - Your mission in Dead Silence is to navigate your neighbor’s basement without making a sound, solving puzzles and uncovering clues before your captor returns. Silence is golden in this room, as speaking too loudly might trigger the lights to go out, so stay sharp, stay quiet, and escape in time.
Also at Deadline - "Freakshow". Your team is trapped inside a dilapidated circus tent, locked in cages and set to become the next gruesome attractions. Solve puzzles, navigate through vintage carnival games, and outwit the psychotic ringmaster to escape before you're transformed into the show’s newest "freaks."
For those seeking a less suspenseful and thrilling experience, "Witch Doctor" provides an excellent alternative, perfect for entertaining your fascination with the supernatural. Your mission: rescue the soul of a voodoo priestess ensnared in the spirit realm. The immersive Bayou atmosphere they've conjured in this room is simply enchanting and is an unforgettable experience that has left a lasting impression on me.
Keystone Escape Games provides an extraordinary experience with their room, "Blood of the Original," which played a significant role in kindling my passion for escape rooms. Your mission in Blood of the Original is to recover the stolen Blood of the Original Vampire before it falls into the wrong hands. Solve puzzles, uncover secrets, and navigate the dark, steampunk inspired lair to save your coven and secure your legacy.
For more of a magical and mystical themed room, "The Sorcerer & the Fountain of Hope" at Breakthrough Reno inside GSR is an amazing option. Your mission is to infiltrate the fallen castle of Azurio and restore the Fountain of Hope to prevent the Great Dragon from escaping and wreaking havoc upon the world. With the dragon's power growing by the minute, you must solve puzzles and navigate through the castle's defenses to save humanity from impending destruction.

In Reno, the peak time to experience fall foliage typically occurs from mid to late October, with colors often reaching their most vibrant between October 15 and October 31.

People visit Hope Valley in the fall primarily to experience its stunning autumn colors. The valley is framed by majestic aspen groves and pine forests, which transform into a tapestry of gold, orange, and red each October. Also, visitors are drawn to the area for its peaceful, serene landscapes, crisp mountain air, and photography opportunities.
Hikers, nature lovers, and artists also flock to Hope Valley to explore its trails, rivers, and meadows, while families and travelers enjoy the scenic drives and cozy accommodations like cabins nestled among the trees. Its proximity to Reno, South Lake Tahoe, and Markleeville makes it favorable as a convenient escape for a day trip or a weekend getaway, offering both outdoor adventure and peaceful relaxation.
For fuel, stop by Hope Valley Cafe & Market, Sorensen's Cafe, or take a short 15-minute drive to the charming town of Markleeville from Wylder Resort. Both options offer tasty baked goods, delicious meals, refreshing drinks, and convenient snacks. While you’re there, don’t forget to ask about local trail recommendations to make the most of your outdoor adventure.
Mayberry Park
Enjoy a scenic stroll along the Truckee River, lined with tall golden cottonwood trees in the fall. This park is dog friendly and has a paved path, porta potty, two bridges, hiking trails, and leads to Dorostkar Park.

One of my favorite parks found on Mt. Rose Highway before hitting Galena Park. The park is in the forest with a creek running through, two play structures, a grass area, and short and long hiking trails nearby.
Truckee Riverwalk
The picturesque autumn foliage set against the waters of the Truckee River creates the perfect fall scene. There are plenty of dining options available along the riverbank. Parking is available at either Idlewild Park or Barbara Benette Park.
This gem is located in Verdi past Boomtown Casino. It has so much beauty, a fishing pond, and a short nature trail.

*The Ambush House in Sparks on its own is enough to make any Halloween special. This attraction is a haunted walk through in the Ambush family's backyard and includes creepers & many different haunting scenes.
They also decorate the front of their house and go all out with huge props like ginormous skeletons, fake fire displaces, lights, & wicked witches that talk.
Feel free to bring some non perishables and drop them in the bins up front and/or donate via QR code up front.

We’ll warm things up with Looney Tunes: Hawaiian Aye Aye (1964)—a breezy, cartoon beach romp that sets a fun, carefree tone before the tide turns. As night falls, grab your blankets and beach chairs for Jaws (1975), Steven Spielberg’s legendary thriller that forever changed suspense, sound design, summer releases, and how audiences experience movies together.
Come dressed for the beach, soak up the summer atmosphere, and experience the film that made moviegoing an event—and made everyone think twice before going back in the water.
