2025 Halloween & Fall Guide: Haunted Houses, Fall Foliage, Ghost Tours, Seasonal Eats, Farms, Trick or Treating & Activities in Reno, Nevada

Press play for background Fall vibes.

Welcome Foolish Mortals/Fall Lovers,

Fall is officially here (even though these hot temps may say otherwise. Heel click is happening either way). Get your funky sweaters out (yes, I'm making an exception from my usual function over fashion life), fill up the gas thank (trust me, you won't want to pass up our glorious fall landscapes), & get your garlic braids, crosses, & salt out (just in case you'll need to ward off any vampires during one of Reno's endless October happenings).

You'd think I grew up surrounded by a lot of Halloween festivities in my younger years, right? Well, not exactly. My love for Halloween was sparked early and involved movies. Lucky for me (not so lucky for others who get spooked easily), I got away with watching all of the most epic Halloween movies in my early years (thanks mom & dad), movies that have transcended generations - Children of The Corn, The Gremlins, Halloween, Candy Man, IT, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, Pet Sematery, The Blaire Witch project...and all of the other classics. If you know, you know. If you don't know, you MUST know! LOL. I'll add in a list of must watch Halloween movies somewhere in this guide, so be sure to check back later.

***Update: Check out this new post featuring a curated list of must watch Halloween movies made by Tim, co-owner of Terror - the biggest little local year round shop dedicated to all things horror.

The more I reflect on these movies, the more I appreciate them. Did they give me nightmares and force me to shower with one eye open? Sure. But they've ultimately shaped my love for Halloween, a love that makes me feel so whole and so alive.  Filmmakers back in the day didn’t have fancy equipment or advanced technology. They had to rely entirely on their skills in storytelling, crafting perfectly complementary scores, and building tension so deliberately that our imaginations couldn’t help but fill in the blanks. Thinking back on these films makes me realize how special Halloween really is. It fills the air with magic and anticipation, and that feeling of stepping into another world for a little while.

And just like that, the season is here again.

As I got older and more conscious of the world of Halloween and all the glorious events, activities, and culture that comes along with it (not to mention the pumpkin and apple everything), the more my love grew for the holiday. Today, I couldn't love it more.

If you know me, you know I don't mess around when it comes to fun, especially holiday fun, and I always do my best to let everyone in on the action. I'll happily give you all the details you need to lock that fun into your calendar (just thinking about how small a scale some of these events operate on sorta makes my blood pressure rise), LOL. In other words, tickets are limited. Be sure to snag them & book/RSVP any events that catch your eye ASAP. If I'm sounding a little like an obsessed holiday person, I AM, and... you're welcome.

We have all sorts of stuff going on all throughout the month of October, and even long before it even starts. Exit summer parties, October Fests, local's summer shenanigans, & festivals kick off the start of a fall/Halloween season that's cozy, spooky, and packed with so many memory making opportunities. If you take a moment and reflect back on your past, what kind of memories stick out (besides the ones where you got into trouble)? Memories centered around experiences, right? Particularly the ones attached with heightened emotions.

Now… back to fall & Halloween. Halloween is the most informal holiday that doesn’t quite get its own official day, yet is celebrated and obsessively loved by millions of people all over the country. Here in Reno, Halloween action is everywhere. And, I'm pretty proud to say that we do a pretty job on the spooky front. You’ll find free, epic backyard haunts and Halloween displays tucked away in neighborhoods across town, built purely out of passion, some so massive they even have sponsors and have made it onto TV. Ever wonder who buys all those huge decorations at Home Depot or Spirit of Halloween? Wonder no more.

Or how about an event where thousands of drunk zombies take over the streets of downtown. Out with the old, in with the new - zombie watching over people watching.

Knock out a two birds one stone special with Virginia City’s Redrun VII - The Resurrection, where you can get your exercise in while outrunning zombies for dear life. Brave the chill at Sand Harbor with spooky movies under the stars, hop aboard the Twain Train to hang out with Mark Twain himself, channel your inner phantom at a masquerade party set in one of Reno’s oldest mansions, dance and party like you’re under a Sanderson Sisters’ spell, witness & become part of a Victorian Nightmare, & strut your true identity loud and proud on Halloween down the streets of one of the most haunted towns in the country, and the LIST. GOES. ON.

...And FALL... oh, fall. Its golden glory, Hallmark vibes, nostalgic displays, crisp as apple cider air, and pumpkin spice everything. There really is no end to the magic of the season.

This guide is mostly made up of my most favorite fall activities & experiences that I've come to love over the years. It's a reflection of my love for our community & city, and just life in general.  I truly hope it inspires your to make memories of your own this fall.

Sip of Saigon never misses with their drinks, desserts, and Vietnamese food.  The owner here is honestly the best.

Reno Public Market is home to so many local businesses.  How spoiled are we to have so many spots to experience under one roof?!  The market also does a great job with keeping the fun vibes and entertainment going year-round. Check out this REEL to see all of the deals you can find during happy hour.  There are some new businesses in the market that just opened, so be sure to check them out.

Events in Detail
Do you know about the wide variety of events (nearly all of them are free & open to the public) offered by the Washoe County Library System?  I made a Halloween themed vinyl bag last year at one of our libraries with the kiddos & it was one of the coolest things we've ever done. Check out their quarterly magazine, Explorer, for the latest happenings.

*My POST about Dragon Lights

The Annual Dragon Lights Festival at the Wilbur D. May Arboretum in Reno is always such a magical experience.

Every year, artists fly in from China and hand make the most impressive lanterns that line the pathways of the already beautiful arboretum and bring it to life in a way that's honestly hard to describe.  The theme changes every year, so each time you go, it's a fresh experience.

If you're on the fence about going, take it from me—it's an easy yes.  How often do you get to experience the city at dark?

What you'll find at the event:
*40+ displays.  It seems to keep on growing with each and every year
*A souvenir section with handmade goods (sometimes you can catch workers making)
*Food court filled with local goodness
*Interactive playground.  Suited for all ages.

Notes:

*My REEL of this haunt.

Halloween fans, horror fans, thrill seekers, and the brave and the bold.... Come a little closer.

Let me introduce you to your newest Halloween obsession - @finalhourhaunt.

Only 5 nights left for this top Halloween attraction.
October 24, 25, 30, 31, & November 1.
10,000 square feet
Professional actors
8pm - Midnight

This haunt is owned and operated by a family headed by Kyle, a man who's dreamed of creating a haunt of his own since he was a kid. I found out about this detail through his mom, who was at the front office along with the rest of the family. I'm not kidding when I say that this is one of the sweetest ladies I've met in Reno. So ironic because her son is responsible for this incredible haunt. It's the genes I tell ya!

This is the power of manifestation. And lucky for us, we get to reap the benefits of this dream come to life in the form of an incredible haunt that holds within it tons of Halloween magic. The details .. the characters... The scenes and the excitement.

You'll find it all here at The Final Hour.

I tried not to include too many details to leave the experience a surprise. Consider this reel a trailer for one of the best attractions you can experience in Reno during the month of October.

Notes
*Google directions misses the mark by just a little bit. Instead of turning at the gate area, make sure to look for a nearby gray "logic" sign and turn into that parking lot
*Dress warm as you'll be waiting outside
*Jump scares & strobe lights included
*I advise Kyle to add in a couple of stair lights at the end of the haunt as I didn't catch them in the darkness. The floor at the end is also a little uneven, so please watch your step
*4-5 time slots available
*Staff is super professional and friendly
*Recommended for ages 8+
*Tickets 🎟️
$32.80 general admission
$48.70 VIP (gets you front of the line access)

I've been posting about Kyle's haunt in my fall guide for the past 3 years. I've totally have been sleeping on this gem. It was finally nice to have made it out. Thanks so much, Kyle, for horrifying great time. 🖤🔪

Imagine premixing some trendy flavors, freezing them into blocks, then shaving them down into the fluffiest snowy ice (with the most expensive machine, lol) and topping them off with your favorite fresh fruits, candies/cookies, and sauces...  This is what Vampire Penguin has to offer.  I LOVE this stuff because it's practically a guilt free dessert that's super refreshing and very Instagram worthy.  My good friends, Tommy & Trinka, are the owners of this business, and they are such sweet people.  If you decide to make it out, make sure to give them your honest feedback (whether good or bad) because they're professional like that and want to make sure you have the best possible product and experience possible.

Club Inferno
*Location:
Bruka Theatre
99 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89501

"This October, Brüka Theatre proudly announces the Reno premiere of Club Inferno, the electrifying, award-winning glam-rock musical created by Reno native Kell Kittell (book & lyrics) with music by Peter Fogel (music & lyrics). Originally a San Francisco cult sensation, Club Inferno blazes back with a reimagined production that fuses outrageous humor, high-voltage rock anthems, and dazzling theatrical spectacle.

Nightclub diva Dante is electrocuted mid-performance and wakes up in the most fabulous nightclub of all—Hell! Guided by the ancient poet Virgil, she journeys through an all-female underworld: nine levels, each ruled by icons from Cleopatra to Judy Garland. Along the way, she confronts the sins of fame, desire, and excess, all to an addictive glam-rock score. Filled with scandalous humor, dazzling costumes, and literally electrifying performances, the show turns Dante’s Divine Comedy into a cabaret of sin and redemption. By the end, our Dante discovers that in Hell, the only way out is to own exactly who you are—heels and all."

"Join us for a spooktacular time at Haunted Mini-Golf

Get ready to putt your way through a ghoulishly fun artist-made mini-golf course filled with creepy obstacles and eerie surprises, shop spooky handmade local items, and enjoy our bar with specialty drinks!

Haunted Halloween Mini-Golf is a fun and creative DIY event where teams build their own mini-golf holes and compete against each other for one of the three grand prizes! All the voting is done by the participants.

Don't miss out on this spine-chilling experience! Mark your calendars and join us for Haunted Halloween Mini-Golf at The Generator Community Makerspace. It's going to be a scream!

We'll also be featuring vendors, food trucks, and we may or may not have a small pumpkin patch available, not to mention more candy than we should legally be allowed to purchase."

-Description from website & Instagram

Haunted mini golf encapsulated everything I LOVE about Halloween.  It has these amazing Halloween themed golf courses that talented local artists build with their own hands.  Who is the world builds anything these days... and with their own hands for that matter?!?  LOL.  To spark a little friendly competition, these artists are rewarded prizes for "Best Hole" and "People's Choice".  They are such an inspiration and to be able to enjoy their creations in such a fun manner is just something so special to me.  Come out to this event.  I can almost guarantee you a good time.  Of course, the last bit depends on how much energy you bring and how ready you are to let all of this magic in.

Last year’s event featured cozy hangout spots, a rad local food truck (Silver State Pie Co.), a small bar, a vendor section packed with Halloween themed creations, creepy background music, complimentary candy, a super fun all ages craft (ghost terrariums), and all the vibes you look for in a Halloween celebration.

Get whisked away on a fabulous journey as she ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love—her way.

Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, including "Since U Been Gone‚" "Roar," "Baby One More Time," "Larger Than Life‚" "That’s The Way It Is,“ and "Can't Stop the Feeling!"—all from the genius songwriter/producer behind more #1 hits than any other artist this century. Break free of the balcony scene and get into this romantic comedy that proves there’s life after Romeo. The only thing tragic would be missing it.

& Juliet is recommended for ages 8+ with adult language. Show and dates are subject to change. Some fees may not be refundable. Ticket policies are at the discretion of the theater and may be changed at any time."

I wrote about South 40 on one of my latest REELS on Instagram.  I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves.  It has tons of space - restaurant, backyard, patio, restaurant, arcade, and party rooms.  As a parent, you can go there knowing your children can roam free and have fun while you kick back and relax.  Since their entertainment section was taken over by In The Game two years ago, they've sculpted such rad entertainment/birthday packages & promos, and their food is always yummy (kid's meals are seriously a steal).  This spot showcases local talent & serves as the prefect venue for community events.

Haunted House: Victorian Nightmare
*Location:
Mackay Mansion
291 S D St, Virginia City, NV 89440

I attended last year’s Vampire Wedding Haunt (REEL), and it was absolutely glorious and unforgettable. Unlike a typical haunt where you just walk through a course and get scared, this one felt more like a full on experience, almost like being part of a live, themed play with a few perfectly placed scares mixed in. The mansion itself is stunning and makes the perfect backdrop for a haunt, and Virginia City is always magical, especially in October when the spooky town vibes are completely off the charts.

Friends, if you’re interested, grab your tickets ASAP! This experience has limited space and time slots.  They can only accommodate a small number of people per day.

The owners of this haunt love what they do and go the distance to create a fun experience.  They make all sorts of fun props to make the scene feel more whole & substantial.

"Get ready to be terrified at the most chilling haunt in town!
We dare you to join us at the Virginia City Haunted House located at the Freight Depot (or should we say Fright Depot)? Doors open each day at 6pm until 10pm, so come anytime between those hours to get your haunt on.

Hate standing in long lines? So do we!
Relax in the heated tent and watch scary movies until it is your turn to enter. A food truck and full bar are available with spookylicious drink specials to make your wait more enjoyable."

-Description from website

Last year, I checked out this haunt during its very first season, and let me tell you, it might have been on the smaller side, but it packed in all the spooky, whimsical, Halloween magic I could’ve hoped for. Each section was dripping with detail, the actors kept things lively, and the pacing was spot on.  Tip: make sure to take some time to take in the sights and interact with the actors.  If you walk past everything too fast, you'll miss out.

This year, and thanks to last season’s success, the haunt has moved into a bigger spot at the Freight Depot.  I'm especially looking forward to the new hangout spot with food & drink available for purchase, and a Halloween movie playing the background.

Dress up, head over early, grab a bite and a drink, and soak in the whole Virginia City vibe before heading to the haunt.

November is Native American Heritage Month, which includes Native Hawaiian and other affiliated island communities. Student members of UNR's Hawai'i Club will share music and dance with our audience before the dome show.

The University of Nevada Hawai'i Club shares the history of Hawaii by advocating and educating the greater community of Hawaii’s rich culture and heritage. We will learn about the ancient Hawaiian traditions and values, as well as the modernized way of life on the islands.

Then view selections from "The One Sky Project," which is a production with international collaboration focused on increasing understanding about cultural and indigenous astronomy, its historical and modern applications, and how our One Sky connects us all.

Each short film represents the perspective of a different culture or Indigenous society from around the globe. Each film stands alone as a short story or in combination as a longer narrative – organized around themes of "Finding Patterns" and developing tools, or as we say, "To Seek Far."

"Masks, mystery, and mayhem await…will you solve the crime before the final whistle blows?

Join us near the full moon on November 8th for a performance of intrigue, deception, and deadly secrets! Your journey begins with a masquerade ball murder mystery set against the flickering lantern light of our historic Pullman cars. Behind every mask lurks a secret, every smile hides suspicion, and before the night is through… someone will meet a mysterious end. As the train winds through the moonlight of the Comstock's Flowery mountains, passengers become part of the story — observing, questioning, and piecing together clues from the suspects around them. In a murder mystery, anyone could be the culprit. And you become the detectives.

This special evening also celebrates two of Hollywood’s original masters of horror — Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, whose chilling portrayals of Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster defined the golden age of gothic cinema. Masks, mystery, and mayhem await aboard the V&T… will you uncover the killer before it’s too late?

Duration: 55 minutes

Bio:
“This band feels like the old family farm,” says Sam Doores, one of five songwriters and multi-instrumentalists in the Deslondes. “It’s a place where we can meet for the Fourth of July, bring our families, grill some burgers, and make some music together. It’s always going to be there, and we know it’s going to work and feel good.” After more than 15 years together, four albums, and countless live shows, the five members have found new inspiration in the ties that bind them together as friends and collaborators, as something close to kin. That sense of comfort and commitment animates their new album, Roll It Out, lending it a quiet poignancy as they reflect on what it means to devote yourself to other people—whether it’s family, friends, audiences, or other guys in the tour van with you.

Founded less as a band than as a neighborhood hang at Doores’ home on Deslonde Street, the band devised an anything-goes philosophy that allowed them to incorporate sounds they picked up on their travels and everything they heard at home: classic country, hobo folk, crust punk, rural blues, Third Ward jazz, rockabilly, r&b, Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint but also George Jones and the Band. “We take turns giving each other somebody to lean on when it’s our turn and the freedom to express themself any way they want,” says Riley Downing, who usually plays guitar and sings his own and others’ songs. “That means we don’t have a particular genre. It’s a gumbo of all different genres and time periods. Everybody’s literally into everything.”

27th Annual Scheels Turkey Trot (2 mile, non timed)
*Location:
Sparks Marina
300 Howard Drive, Sparks, NV 89434

"While Sir Stuffy totally rocks a hard hat, we’ll leave the heavy lifting to the real pros. Our speedy 10k is on hold while Sparks Blvd gets a makeover with road construction, but don’t worry, it’ll be back before you know it. This year’s Turkey Trot will keep things cozy with our classic 2-mile stroll around the Marina, perfect for soaking up the views and holiday cheer. Feeling extra peppy? Go ahead and trot that extra mile… or four… by taking two more laps around the Marina. And to make this year extra memorable, we’re bringing back our famous Turkey Trot sweatshirts!

To help show our support and excitement for the widening project, we are encouraging walkers and runners to wear something "construction" related! We can't wait to see what you all come up with and the runner or walker that has the most construction related clothing on (throughout their run or walk), gets a special prize from our special events team.

Race proceeds ($2 per runner) will go to Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and Amateur Radio Emergency Services."

Broadway Show
*Location:
Pioneer Center
100 S Virginia St, Reno, NV 89501

"The most Tony Award-winning Show of the year. The most Tony Award-nominated Play of all time. Stereophonic mines the agony and the ecstasy of creation as it zooms in on a music studio in 1976. Here, an up-and-coming rock band recording a new album finds itself suddenly on the cusp of superstardom. The ensuing pressures could spark their breakup — or their breakthrough. Written by David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and featuring original music by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, Stereophonic invites the audience to immerse themselves — with fly-on-the-wall intimacy — in the powder keg process of a band on the brink of blowing up.

Stereophonic is recommended for ages 13 and up. The play contains simulated drug use and adult topics. The run time is 3 hours, including a 15-minute intermission."

Seasonal Baked Goods

Mix Bakeshop

1117 California Ave, Reno, NV 89509

Fall/Halloween Items available Oct. 1st

Halloween cookie kits and pies are popular, so placing your order ahead of time is best.

-Cookie Decorating Kits

-Jack Skellington & Jumbleberry pie are popular.

-Seasonal/Halloween Cupcakes

-Seasonal Pies - Pecan, Pumpkin, Apple, Pumpkin Streusel, & more

If there's one place you can depend on for delicious year round pies, Mix Bakeshop is the spot.  Their crust is so flavorful and buttery and their fillings are made with quality ingredients.

They also have cutie sized pies that make sampling each flavor a easy.

Also available are cookie kits and cupcakes in all sorts of flavors.

This shop has fun old fashioned vibes that make it fun to visit.  I always look forward to my visits here, especially during the holidays.

Batch Cupcakery is a local bakery favorite that makes one of the best pumpkin cupcakes in town.  This shop has been around for a while and was one of the first to cater to all diets, including paleo, vegan, and keto.  Locations in Midtown and South Reno.

Great Basin Co-op is a local grocery store where you can find seasonal offerings, including an amazing pumpkin cookie/muffin/pumpkin latte.  They usually have a daily gluten free/vegan treat on hand.  Call ahead to see what they have in stock. This grocery store is so charming and one of the best spots to hang out to for community vibes.

*Silver State Pie Co. - Seriously good sweet & savory pies made by seriously rad people. Find this food truck all around town, and let Colton & Chef Jason take care of your holiday/everyday pies. They're seriously the best.

The Chocolate Shoppe

Halloween Themed Chocolates & Other Treats

*The Chocolate Shoppe in Gardnerville (50 minutes away form South Reno) has the widest selection of holiday themed chocolates.  They can whip up custom baskets that fit your budget and send them out by mail.

*Bouchee Confections & Tandem Chocolates are craft chocolate shops in Reno that make gourmet edible art from scratch with skill and expertise.  The ladies behind these treats are both amazing people.

*Dorinda's has a wide array treats and makes delicious pumpkin truffles every fall that are delicious. I also love adding them into a custom order of rolled ice cream.  See my recipe below.

Tip: Add any of their chocolates from their case to make yourself a special ice cream concoction.  You can also enjoy any of their flavors vegan style.

Pumpkin Truffle Custom Rolled Ice Cream
Ask for a vanilla base, add in a pumpkin truffle + a dash of cinnamon and top with graham crackers, caramel sauce, more cinnamon, whipped cream, and yes, another pumpkin truffle.
Pumpkin Truffle Rolled Ice Cream without toppings

Rolled Mountain Creamery Locations

*727 Riverside Drive Ste. E, Reno, Nevada, 89503
This location is next door to Hub Coffee Roasters and across the street of the Truckee River.  Their shared patio is a pleasant spot to hang around in a nice lively atmosphere.  No indoor seating available.

*7400 Rancharra Parkway, Ste. 170, Reno, Nevada 89511
Located at the Village at Rancharra, a stunning village made of modern farmhouse style buildings, all joined by a communal area that's super fun to hang around.  Play human sized chess & bocce ball.  If you get lucky, you'll catch an event and/or live entertainment during your visit.

View in front of Dorinda's at the Village at Rancharra

Caramel Apples

*Fuzziwig's in Scheel's at the Outlets at Legends, Sparks, makes a good traditional caramel apple.  I love that they're always fresh, huge, & not overly sweet.  They always satisfy cravings, especially during the holidays.

*Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory also makes a wide variety of delicious caramel apples, along with other Halloween themed items.  I love their toffee caramel apple and always snag one whenever I see them at events.

List of Seasonal Items In & Around Town
*The Lodge - Apple Spice Chai, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Irish Coffee, Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini, Apple Spice Margarita
*Coffee N' Comics - Pumpkin King (tuxedo pumpkin mocha), Pumpkin Pie Latte, Ube Cinnamon Roll, Chica's Cupcake Chai (vanilla chai with strawberry, cinnamon, & white chocolate). Drink also available iced. Mama's Apple Pie Frap
Pumpkin Pancakes - The Cup Cafe, Squeeze In, Sunrise Cafe, Peg's Glorified Eggs & Ham
*Rolled Mountain Creamery - Pumpkin Truffle Rolled Ice Cream
(See my custom recipe above, CTRL+F)
Pumpkin Pie is my favorite because it has a nice pumpkin and graham cracker crust flavor.  Tip:  Make any flavor into a milkshake. Handels
*Batch Cupcakery - pumpkin cupcake w/ cream cheese frosting & other seasonal offerings like Halloween decorating cookie kits
*Doughboys - pumpkin donut, apple fritter, maple bar
*Scoopers- Scoopers has tasty milkshakes in a ridiculous amount of flavors to take advantage of. If milkshake heaven existed, this would be it. Here are some flavor combos I came up with:

Pumpkin + Cinnamon + Whipped Cream
Think of it like a PSL in milkshake form.

Apple Pie + Caramel + Cheesecake
Apple Pie Cheesecake sounds like it could work.  What do you think?

Visit a Farm
Visiting a farm in the fall is mandatory every year.  I'm pretty sure many others will agree with me on this one.  It's a tradition that just makes the whole season feel complete... sorta like how people put up trees during Christmas.   The more farms you can visit, the better.  Each one  has it's own vibes, offerings, and atmosphere.

My Farm Criteria:
*Does the farm feel cozy and welcoming?
*Are there cute animals I can bother (and take way too many pictures of)?
*Is the farm just as obsessed as I am when it comes to offerings - souvenirs, seasonal goodies, & little surprises?
*Can it keep my demanding kids entertained without me losing my mind?
*Is there a spot where I can buy a bunch of things I don’t technically need but will 100% make me happy?
*A farm without baked goods is a major red flag. (I’m talking pies, donuts, breads, the works.)
*And of course, the grub. Sweet, savory, hearty, or festive…Please, take advantage of me.
*Bonus activities -  live music, hayrides, a pumpkin patch, or anything that makes me feel like I’ve stepped straight into a Hallmark movie.

Fun Ghost Town & Shooting Gallery
in Virginia City
($5/person, 3 & under free)

Shoaf's ghost town is charming year round walk through located next to the Sawdust Trails store that my kids (5,7, & 9) have been enjoying for the past several years.

***Note:  No live actors or jump scares, just cute spooky scenes to enjoy.

Shoaf's Ghost Town, Sawdust Trails, Virginia City Escape Room, and the kettle corn/ice cream spot are all conveniently placed right next to one another and are owned by the same owner, Brian, who's one super kind and nice guy.  The details you'll find at these shops are magnificent.  It's apparent that they were all made with love.

This is one of my favorite shooting galleries ever.  Its charm is undeniable and you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that some of the objects have sound effects and even move when shot at.

Creepy & Spooky Displays at Spirit of Halloween and Home Depot

Spirit of Halloween has so many spooky  interactive displays that me and my kids can't get enough of every year.  The themed displays change every year, making every visit fresh and fun.

Home Depot has really been upping their game with Halloween animatronics these past few years.  Talking witches brewing up a storm in their cauldron, zombie barbers, singing Jack Skellingtons, and the most horrifyingly realistic duo of all, Chucky & his bride, Tiffany...  It's all good fun.

Are you familiar with escape rooms? If not, allow me to introduce you to my latest obsession. I conquered my first escape room about four years ago and have been hooked ever since. There's truly nothing more exhilarating, exciting, empowering, entertaining, and cooler than escape rooms.

Escape rooms are immersive experiences where you and a group of friends, family, or even strangers get locked in a room to play a game. Your mission is to solve a series of puzzles and "escape" your way out.

Rooms vary by difficulty, but most grant you unlimited hints and truly want you to succeed, so tackling one shouldn't be intimidating.

Lucky for us, Reno has some amazing escape room options, and among them are a few that have become my all-time favorites, having experienced over 55 across San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. The rooms I’m highlighting in this guide are perfect for the Halloween season, featuring spooky and eerie themes.

All October long is Halloweekdays at Deadline! $5 off per player (of teams of 4 or more!) every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Deadline Escape Room's "Dead Silence"  - Your mission in Dead Silence is to navigate your neighbor’s basement without making a sound, solving puzzles and uncovering clues before your captor returns. Silence is golden in this room, as speaking too loudly might trigger the lights to go out, so stay sharp, stay quiet, and escape in time.

Also at Deadline - "Freakshow".   Your team is trapped inside a dilapidated circus tent, locked in cages and set to become the next gruesome attractions. Solve puzzles, navigate through vintage carnival games, and outwit the psychotic ringmaster to escape before you're transformed into the show’s newest "freaks."

For those seeking a less suspenseful and thrilling experience, "Witch Doctor" provides an excellent alternative, perfect for entertaining your fascination with the supernatural. Your mission: rescue the soul of a voodoo priestess ensnared in the spirit realm. The immersive Bayou atmosphere they've conjured in this room is simply enchanting and is an unforgettable experience that has left a lasting impression on me.

Keystone Escape Games provides an extraordinary experience with their room, "Blood of the Original," which played a significant role in kindling my passion for escape rooms.  Your mission in Blood of the Original is to recover the stolen Blood of the Original Vampire before it falls into the wrong hands. Solve puzzles, uncover secrets, and navigate the dark, steampunk inspired lair to save your coven and secure your legacy.

For more of a magical and mystical themed room, "The Sorcerer & the Fountain of Hope" at Breakthrough Reno inside GSR is an amazing option.  Your mission is to infiltrate the fallen castle of Azurio and restore the Fountain of Hope to prevent the Great Dragon from escaping and wreaking havoc upon the world. With the dragon's power growing by the minute, you must solve puzzles and navigate through the castle's defenses to save humanity from impending destruction.

Fall Foliage in & Around Reno

In Reno, the peak time to experience fall foliage typically occurs from mid to late October, with colors often reaching their most vibrant between October 15 and October 31.

Hope Valley
(1 hr away from Reno toward South Lake Tahoe. Drive another 26 mins. and you'll reach South Lake Tahoe.)
Visitors Admiring the Scenery

People visit Hope Valley in the fall primarily to experience its stunning autumn colors. The valley is framed by majestic aspen groves and pine forests, which transform into a tapestry of gold, orange, and red each October. Also, visitors are drawn to the area for its peaceful, serene landscapes, crisp mountain air, and photography opportunities.

Hikers, nature lovers, and artists also flock to Hope Valley to explore its trails, rivers, and meadows, while families and travelers enjoy the scenic drives and cozy accommodations like cabins nestled among the trees. Its proximity to Reno, South Lake Tahoe, and Markleeville makes it favorable as a convenient escape for a day trip or a weekend getaway, offering both outdoor adventure and peaceful relaxation.

For fuel, stop by Hope Valley Cafe & Market, Sorensen's Cafe, or take a short 15-minute drive to the charming town of Markleeville from Wylder Resort. Both options offer tasty baked goods, delicious meals, refreshing drinks, and convenient snacks. While you’re there, don’t forget to ask about local trail recommendations to make the most of your outdoor adventure.

Mayberry Park
Enjoy a scenic stroll along the Truckee River, lined with tall golden cottonwood trees in the fall.  This park is dog friendly and has a paved path, porta potty, two bridges, hiking trails, and leads to Dorostkar Park.

(Tours of Mansion - End of May - End of October)

Rentable Pavilion @ Bower's Mansion

One of my favorite parks found on Mt. Rose Highway before hitting Galena Park.  The park is in the forest with a creek running through, two play structures, a grass area, and short and long hiking trails nearby.

Truckee Riverwalk
The picturesque autumn foliage set against the waters of the Truckee River creates the perfect fall scene. There are plenty of dining options available along the riverbank. Parking is available at either Idlewild Park or Barbara Benette Park.

This gem is located in Verdi past Boomtown Casino.  It has so much beauty, a fishing pond, and a short nature trail.

The kids living it up with Gramps.
Enjoy a handful of deciduous trees spread throughout the park's beautiful grounds.

(Returning 2026)

*The Ambush House in Sparks on its own is enough to make any Halloween special. This attraction is a haunted walk through in the Ambush family's backyard and includes creepers & many different haunting scenes.

They also decorate the front of their house and go all out with huge props like ginormous skeletons, fake fire displaces, lights, & wicked witches that talk.

Feel free to bring some non perishables and drop them in the bins up front and/or donate via QR code up front.

If you're looking for some chill coastal music to listen to while checking out this post...  Coast Modern is always like a fresh breath of coastal air. They rock.

Boy, does time fly.  About ten years ago, my baby girl hit a milestone at Sand Harbor - she started pointing at 12 months old (once I find that picture, I'll be sure to add it to this post).  Yes, Sand Harbor's beauty has that kind of effect on people.

Needless to say, Sand Harbor is one of Lake Tahoe's most popular beaches, drawing over 1 million visitors annually with its stunning scenery, clear turquoise waters, amenities, access to outdoor recreation, history, and undeniable charm, all of which keep me coming back time and time again.

It's simply crazy how you can take this shuttle around the area for FREE.  Take advantage of it! Being a tourist has never been easier, LOL.

And it being a tourist attraction is no reason to not visit.  Sure, it can get super crowded at times, but having it nearby grants us the power to strategically visit it during off peak times - early mornings & late evenings during peak summer days, as well as during our "local's summer," the period after tourists leave the area and before fall arrives, usually mid-September to mid-October.

With the fluctuations in weather and temps reaching into the 100s, there's never been a better time to take advantage of our nearby beaches.  In some of the pictures featured in this post, the kids and I took a spontaneous trip last week that lasted from 5-8:30pm.  The beach was practically empty and the water was warm enough for my kids to enjoy a swim.  Spontaneous beach days are so special, and many times end up being the best kind of days... I think in big part because 1. last minute adventures spark excitement, 2. spontaneity mean less planning, and in turn, less stress (at least that's the hope), & 3. I don't think there's such thing as a bad beach day, no matter the time & weather.
Aside from its beauty, Sand Harbor has so much more going on for itself.  It has a restaurant, places to wash the sand off your feet, an underrated gift shop/museum that I think more people should be talking about, a beloved and widely celebrated annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival that features proper plays and entertainment that take place during the most magical time of the day - sunset time - against the most epic background of water, shoreline, and a blanket of endless majestic evergreens, and so much more.  Catch Twelfth Night, Shakespeare's romantic comedy, and Peter and the Suncatcher, a playful Peter Pan sequel, now through August 24, 2025.
Kokanee Bar & Grill
Another thing I love about this beach is its design.  You have your main beach area with its water sports rentals, restaurant & museum, and a wood walkway connecting to some lookouts, another smaller more intimate beach section with huge climbable boulders, the event area, a rentable pavilion, and a quieter boat launch/docking area.
Not to mention its location on the stunning, less developed North shore and proximity to the main part of Incline Village, an underrated part of Lake Tahoe that's loaded with everything needed for a memorable & fun visit.
A Personal Note
My daughter just started the 6th grade yesterday (tears).  I can remember when I was in the 6th like it was just yesterday!  Bottom line:  TIME FLIES.  And that's a big reason why I seize every moment I get to do the things I love, with the people I love.

Connecting with nature has limitless benefits, many of them priceless and not easy to measure.  Visit nature during sunrise or sunset time, and you'll witness these benefits to the max.  Tourists fly in from all over the world to visit this beach (& Lake Tahoe as a whole), & it boggles my mind how many people who live nearby still haven't been.  Hopefully this post is enough to spark your curiously and inspires you to see it with your own eyes.

It's easy to get caught up in the frenzy of life, so be sure to pause from time to time and ask yourself if it's time to reconnect with yourself, your family, and nature.  Oh, and try to not just chase the next thing and instead embrace & experience what's now.  Often, we don't realize we're living the moments we'll one day miss.  Now, get out there and be happy and don't just past time... make it matter.

Bonuses
*You can access the epic, family-friendly Tahoe East Shore Trail (multi-use path designed for walking, running, and rolling) either from the boat launch side of the beach or from multiple spots in Incline Village & Tunnel Creek Cafe if you’re not planning to enter through the beach.

There are a decent number of FREE parking spaces along Highway 28, heading southeast from Incline Village and just before Tunnel Creek Cafe.

If those fill up, you’ll need to use paid parking. Here are the parking rates.

*Note: A $2 entrance fee is required for anyone visiting Sand Harbor by foot or bike (cards accepted).

Want more information? Check out this Tahoe East Shore Trail Guide.

The whole trail hugs the shoreline, with endless little hangout spots and jaw-dropping views. Since these areas aren’t accessible by car, they feel like a hidden reward for anyone willing to put in the effort to get there.

*Enjoy horse drawn carriage rides with Tahoe Sleigh Rides at the park in winter.
The views from Tahoe East Shore bike trail are phenomenal.
Hidden Beach is a gorgeous little stretch of shoreline tucked between Tunnel Creek and Sand Harbor. Since there’s no dedicated parking lot, the easiest way to reach it is by walking or biking the East Shore Trail. It's a more secluded spot compared to Tahoe’s busier beaches. But fair warning: Hidden Beach is also known for its clothing optional crowd.

(5 miles, 10 mins. from Sand Harbor)
*Thania's Juice Bar - Organic eats and organic drinks prepared by a fierce owner who listens to her customers and treats them with kindness.  Nutrition is always #1.
*Koi Sushi - pretty good sushi spot with AYCE and budget maki roll options.  Heads up:  Their portions are huge just in case you're interested in taking on an all you can eat session.  Sushi in Lake Tahoe... This is like a cherry on top of a cherry, LOL.  Life doesn't get any better than this.
*Happy Tiers Bakery - if you want a serious spread of pastries and desserts, this place is sure to deliver.  Serves local coffee from Coffeebar.  Their tiramisu and key lime pie are pure FIRE.

Down the Street from Christmas Tree Village
*Sushi Scoops - cute little shop that serves ice cream, shakes & malts, sundaes, smoothies, frozen yogurt, shaved ice, sodas.
*Wing's Korean Chicken - Located in the same plaza as Susie Scoops.  I've been enjoying this place for a good while now since the kids were babies. It's without a doubt one of the best spot for chicken wings.  Tip: ask for the sauce on the side to regulate the sauce and keep the wings crispy.  Oh, and don't skip the sweet fried cheese balls. They're so addicting.

Bowl Incline (4.7 miles, 10 mins. from Sand Harbor)
Pricing of activities is on the higher end because of its location, but still a fun spot for its lively and bright atmosphere and retro/mid century modern vibes.  Includes 16 lanes, patio with games like cornhole & axe throwing, arcade, bar, and restaurant (note: they serve dole whip, a pineapple soft serve that's loved by many (and that's including me, of course).  Make reservations for bowling lanes HERE.

Incline Village Recreation Center (Website)
A welcoming community space open to the public offering a variety of fitness, sports, and family-friendly activities for all ages. There's a fun, short, and sweet trail that follows Incline Creek that I've done many times with my kiddos that starts right next to the Bocce Ball area.  There's also the Stream Environment Zone on the opposite side, which offers an 0.85-mile loop through a forested area with several small bridges that cross over streams and creeks.  Places like this can convince people that fairies are real, for real!

Tip: Bring a bathing suit and waterproof footwear so you can splash around in the multiple creeks and streams found throughout the area.
