Has anyone else noticed the record breaking, summer-like temperatures lately... in SPRING?!? I most certainly have. June’s average temperature in Reno is about 69°F, with a high of 85°F & a low of 53°F, yet we’ve frequently seen temperatures nearing 100 °F. To my recollection, these kind of temps usually make an appearance for a brief time at the peak of every summer.
And that storm on Saturday (6/21) that I'm pretty sure you've been seeing all over your social media feed. I happened to be in Virginia City at the time and caught some snowfall. What a summer solstice, huh? In places of high elevation, weather can be so unpredictable. I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty rad when I get the chance to experience all four seasons in one day.
Now, getting back to summer. It’s going to be a hot one, based on AccuWeather: sustained 90s and upper 80s are expected all throughout the season, with temperatures finally dipping into the 70s by late September.
Yes, summers can be uncomfortable, but can you imagine feeling defeated and paralyzed by a season, just hiding in a cave for months waiting for the heat to die down (or waiting in winter for the heat to come back)? It doesn't sound too appealing, does it? If you look all around you, there are countless ways to beat the heat and enjoy the season. We're literally living in the most convenient slice of life, loaded with all the gadgets, places, and treats that can help change your perspective. I know, it would be so convenient to have a pause button for life, but the reality is, it doesn't exist. You can never get time back no matter how hard your try, so it's important to make the most of every moment.
My advice is to harness your inner creativity (we all have it within us) and use it to embrace the season (every other season for that matter). For summer, specifically, take advantage of Reno’s hidden escapes, high elevation hikes, events & festivals (many of which are free), workshops, shows, shaded parks, creeks & splash pads for the kids, quick Lake Tahoe getaways, and of course, icy treats and eats that help keep you sane.
On US‑50 (Lake Tahoe Blvd), just east of the Airport Road intersection, right at the entrance to South Lake Tahoe. It’s on the right (south) side of the road as you drive in. Head east on US‑50 from downtown South Lake Tahoe (~2 miles).
Below, you'll find a curated list of events, many beloved local favorites, to help you make the most of the season.
Some events have limited tickets (especially with our growing population), so if something catches your eye, snag those spots asap. Also, stay tuned as I update my list throughout the summer with events I've missed or pop up at later times. For those who like to plan ahead, check out my comprehensive list of events on the right side of this blog.
Many of these events and activities are free and open to the public, offering unique experiences you won't find just anywhere. And with our town centered around a river and such diverse landscapes, there are endless possibilities for adventures, whether you stay close or venture out. Your only homework is to get out there and have some fun. I'll take care of the rest.
P.S. This post is a reflection of my love for our amazing city and the people who make it rad. In other words, it's not sponsored.
Hope it's a good one.
Peace, Love, & Kindness.

I met Addison on the streets of Virginia City during the Street Vibrations Festival while on 3.5 hr. layover with the V& T Railway (this ride is so epic), and he’s incredibly talented and funny. He truly made our family trip extra special.

Board games and Super Nintendo available for customers.
Agua frescas (fruit waters) from Paleteria de Angel. They're super fresh, but don't skimp on the sweetness. Let your ice melt for a more tamed agua fresca.
-Reno's Summer Festivals: We have tons to enjoy. Biggest Little Wing Festival, Reno Rodeo, Northern Nevada Pride, Artown, Hot August Nights, The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off, to name a few.
-Hiking: One of Reno’s biggest draws is its endless access to the great outdoors, and there’s absolutely no shortage of it. This incredible natural beauty is a huge part of why I love this city so much.
-River Tubing: Float down the Truckee River for a relaxing and fun summer activity. Lots of people like to park a car at Mayberry Park (start) & finish at Wingfield Park (about 3.5 miles, 2-4 hrs.). Big adventurers will sometimes start their trek in Truckee.
There's a new Truckee River float experience in town - Float Reno. I haven't tried them out yet, but it looks like a good time. I've been wondering for ages where to find a service like this in Reno.
-Outdoor Reading: Find a shady spot next to the river at Barbara Bennett Park for a good book from Grassroots Books or The Radical Cat. The park’s serene atmosphere is ideal for getting lost in a story. Galena Regional Park - South Entrance. Tons of shaded areas available along the creek found right next to parking lot. Idlewild Park, McKinley Arts & Cultural Center, Wilbur May Arboretum, and Bower's Mansion all have lawns and tons of shady areas.
-Mini Golf: Magic Carpet Golf on South Virginia St. is a charming, old-school spot that's tons of fun, featuring beautiful landscaping and plenty of shade trees. Coconut Bowl in Sparks offers a small indoor neon-lit course and a much larger outdoor fun course. Their unlimited wristband is the best deal ($57.99) if you plan on staying the whole day (attractions open 12pm daily). It includes unlimited go-carts, laser tag, mini golf, bowling, jungle gym time, and much more. King's Beach Miniature Golf is a favorite in Tahoe City due to its prime location next to King's Beach and Tahoe Time ice cream, as well as its beautiful course shaded by beautiful evergreen trees. Heavenly Village transforms its skating rink to a fun mini golf course every summer.
-Cycling: Explore the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail, the longest trail in Reno (114 miles) that follows the Truckee River from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. Great starting points in Reno: Mayberry Park, Idlewild Park, Crissie Caughlin Park, or GSR. Check out this detailed trail map guide of biking trails in our area, made by Rich, owner of Great Basin Bicycles. He also does bike repairs like a boss and strives to get your bike back to you as quickly as possible.
-Bird Watching: Summer is great for bird watching at Virginia Lake Park, Damonte Ranch Wetlands, Swan Lake Nature Study Area, Rosewood Nature Study Area, & Washoe Lake State Park.

Note: Vikingsholm lot fills up almost instantly in the mornings and stays full throughout the day. And the trek down to the castle & beach rentals is 1 mile. -Swimming Spots: GSR has a nice pool that's open to the public. Purchase a day pass in person to save some $. Enjoy a full menu & music and entertainment on select days throughout the summer. The new indoor swimming fitness center on Moana is huge. I love Bower's Mansion for it's vibes and location. Their renovated pool includes a splash pad for littles. Check out my blog post to learn more about this spot. Atlantis and The Peppermill both have cool intimate pools, but don't have public access. Outside guests can purchase spa treatmens/passes and gain access to the pools.
-Places to splash around: Outlets at Legends next to H&M, Cyan & Idlewild Park. Bob McFadden Plaza, Carson City (all FREE); Lazy 5 Regional Park, Bower's Mansion ($). Wild Island has a huge waterpark. Note: season passes sell out fast every year, so be sure to subscribe to their newsletter to stay up to date on the latest news.

*Yosemite National Park (3.5 hrs. from Reno):Renowned for its stunning granite cliffs, waterfalls, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Closest entrance from Reno - Tioga Pass. Reservations required during summer.
*Virginia City: Step back in time to the Old West with historic buildings, museums, and scenic views of the Comstock Lode. After all these years, I'm still shocked to be living so close to such a special town. I'm truly head over heels (or boots) for VC.
For the adventurous: Take the 24-mile round trip train with Virginia & Truckee Railway from Carson City to Virginia City for a hassle free way to experience our area's beauty, history, and charm.
DAVE is the most hilarious and knowledgeable conductor ever to exist.
Lake Tahoe: Explore Lake Tahoe for endless outdoor adventures - beaches, hiking trails, breathtaking lake views, and more. It’s just a short drive from Reno, typically 40 minutes to 1.3 hours depending on your starting point. The drive never feels long because it’s beautiful the whole way. A must-visit spot multiple times each summer. Not a fan of crowds? Visit during locals' summer, the window after Labor Day and before the first snowfall.
Unique South Lake Tahoe Experience
@tahoestarcharters, commissioned by Bill Harrah in the past, is notoriously known for its history with entertaining tons of celebrities - Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, & Robin Williams, to name a few.
It's the only charter in Lake Tahoe that offers tours to Thunderbird Lodge, an impressive historic estate built in the 1930s by eccentric millionaire George Whittell, a man known for his undeniable love for fast boats, fast cars, and fast girls.
The tour is without a doubt, one of the coolest and most unforgettable experiences to date. First of all, you have the experience, and most importantly, the people who being that experience to life. The views, the vibes, the story, & the company...everything was well though out, and the Tahoe Star team were stars, to say the least. I was truly honored to be invited to experience it firsthand.
The charter is also available for private events. Seriously, if you're looking for some advice in life - gather all of your friends (up t0 30), split the cost, and enjoy an adventure of a lifetime.
Note: Invitation or not, it was only a matter of time before I found this gem on my own. I live for experiences like this and love sharing them so you can make the most of life, too.
On a personal note: My dad has poured so much of his time and energy into making sure his kids were safe and cared for, myself included. Bringing him along on this tour meant everything to me. I was overwhelmed with joy knowing he could experience something my mom never got the chance to, simply because we waited too long.
NOTES
*Other tours on the lake: MS Dixie II (Zephry Cove), Tahoe Gal (North Lake Tahoe), & Tahoe Cruises (South Lake Tahoe)

Ikeada's is one of my favorite pit stops on 80w on the way to Sacramento. Their tuna poke bowl is so fresh and so clean - but heads up, it's heavy on the arugula & carrot. The extra veggies would taste great on a burger. If you're thinking about purchasing one of their pies, they're on the sweeter side, but undoubtedly fresh & easily balanced with a a serving of ice cream/whipped cream. I prefer their cold pies, which are much more balanced with sugar. Purchase whole or by the slice.
*Sacramento: California's capital city known for its historic Old Sacramento district and diverse cultural attractions. Their railroad museum is an absolutely train lover's dream come true.
*San Francisco: Famous for its iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and vibrant cultural scene.

-Farmer's Markets: Enjoy fresh, seasonal produce, delicious food offerings, talented craft vendors, & a vibrant atmosphere buzzing with life & community.
I haven't been to this Farmer's market yet, but I have been to Markleeville (about 45 miles South of Reno) and can tell you that it's a cute and charming town that's nestled right next to Hope Valley, one of the most beautiful areas to experience in fall in the region. Excited to see one of my favorite bakeries (Sierra Chef in Genoa) participating this year.
My Favorite Farmer's Markets
-Riverside Farmer's Market: An amazing year-round market offering a wide array of clean, nourishing, and tasty eats, produce, and craft vendors. Located in Idlewild Park - plenty of shade, grassy lawns, and live entertainment.
Local ice cream - @frostgiantcreamery. Ice cream making started at home with a $1k machine, and during Covid times, the passion turned into a business. Can't go wrong with any flavor.
@mwintsoph has watched my 3 rascals grow up over the span of 10 years. Fausta, the lean, mean baking machine, is behind all the baked goods you’d think were made by a team. Every market and event, you can expect to find her with cookies, baklava, & handmade loaves.
Visit @grindzcoffeecompany for their cute truck, friendly service, fresh baked goods, refreshing smoothies, and a good cup of Joe to get your morning off to the right start.
Other features include local produce, local craft vendors, a welcome stand with warm people from the church (& free water), & live entertainment.

This event is part of Artown, a citywide arts festival that takes place every July.
I've been taking my kiddos to Arts for All Nevada's art festivals for years, and they never cease to impress me. Learning art in a charming 148 year old building, supported by a program passionate about spreading creativity is plain special. To protect it from demolition, the mansion has been moved twice. It's a cherished piece of Reno's heritage, and I hope you get a chance to experience it.

If you're into mini road trips, small town charm, homegrown cantaloupes, variety shows, & more, Fallon's annual Cantaloupe Festival is the place to be.
Is it always blazing hot around the time of the festival? Yes, BUT there's something at the festival to counter that: CANTALOUPE ice cream!
Growing up in a Filipino household, I had cantaloupes on a regular basis... kind of like how Americans have bananas. It wasn't until I grew up that I realized that cantaloupes in America are usually enjoyed plain and chilled.
In my house, I had them shredded in fruit waters, blended into smoothies, and made into what Filipinos called "Ice Candy," a blended cantaloupe/sugar/milk/condensed milk mixture poured & frozen in little long plastic baggies - a popsicle-like treat, just without the stick.
Friends, Fallon's cantaloupe ice cream is made using homegrown cantaloupes. Me finding this treat is like miners finding gold, LOL. If I had a golden nugget and someone offered the last serving of cantaloupe ice cream for it, I would gladly give it up in a heart beat.
Besides the ice cream and fresh cantaloupes that leak out onto your chopping board, I enjoy Fallon's efforts in including a little bit of everything for everyone - pig races, a small, interactive & educational exhibit, carnival, vendors, eats, entertainment, and even a rodeo.
There's this entertainer named Sam Malcom, who performs at the festival every year. He's a Fallon local, and one of the most hilarious & talented performers that I enjoy watching every single year. His variety show is impressive because he weaves humor into it, most of which is tailored to adults. If you make it out this year, make sure to check out his show & brace yourself for a hilarious ride (appreciates & accepts donations - cash and Venmo accepted). Schedule: 8/23 @ 9pm, 8/24 @ 4pm, 8/25 @ 11am.
Notes
*Parking is free but fills up fast. Get there early to beat the crowds and heat.
*Purchase tickets online to save time
*If you have a small cooler, load it up with ice and drinks. Save $ and use it on the juicy cantaloups, LOL.

Mr. Yummy Yummy's Ribeye Steak Bowl always slaps. If you're taking it to go, make sure to sauce it up before leaving the truck with spicy mayo, teriyaki, & sriracha sauce. YUM!
Nevada Fine Arts has been a cultural hub in Reno since 1973... that's long before I was born! LOL. When a business has been running for that long, it's definitely a good sign. Truth be told - it’s the local shop you need in your life. It’s got all the supplies, the teachers, and the creative vibes you want in a true art community.
And the people here are Grade A. They’re always ready to help, offer some direction, or just say hey. Seasoned or aspiring artist, you have to visit this place.
And if you're someone who wants to pass your craft on to others, definitely talk to them about teaching a class. They love supporting local talent.
Fun fact: if you check out their events page, you’ll see Luna, my 10 year old, & her portrait of our dog, Gunther (15 yrs.), front and center on the cover of their “Sketching Animal Portraits for Beginners” class. I still can’t believe how amazing her portrait turned out, thanks to her instructor, Victoria. Absolutely priceless.
