Why Galena Creek Regional Park is Special
Galena Creek Regional Park is the kind of place people would happily drive long distances to get to for recreational activities, picnics, hikes, and encounters with nature. Lucky for us, it's in Reno, just 10 minutes up Mt. Rose Highway from South Reno. Sitting at around 5,100-5,300 ft. at the base of Mt. Rose, the park spans roughly 440 acres, and the place that signals that adventure is just ahead - and that you chose the right place to live (that is, if you're an outdoor lover). If you ever wonder about those forest places people turn into that seem like they lead to nowhere, this is that kind of place. Turn in from Mt. Rose Highway and discover one of your new go-to spots for a quick and easy getaway into nature. I've made countless memories with family and friends at this hidden gem, and I'm sure you will too!
It’s a year round gem with hiking trails for all levels, family-friendly picnic spots, stunning scenery, a rad & educational visitor's center, water features - a lively creek that spreads all throughout the park & Marilyn's Pond, a wedding worthy venue (Galena Hatchery), and even a campfire program during the month of July that features live local entertainment and s'mores for the whole community to enjoy. And while it feels like a getaway, the park is well developed with plenty of amenities to keep you comfortable while you take in all the beauty.
The standout features of Galena Creek Regional Park are its proximity to Reno, accessibility, activities and events, and natural beauty. Pop in for a quick nature escape, take advantage of their venues for a family gatherings or special events, connect with nature, and simply take a moment to relax and connect & enjoy the outdoors.
The abundant shade from the towering pine trees and numerous access points to the creeks make the park a perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer day. If you're into learning more about the area, the park's visitor center is nothing short of amazing. It has educational exhibits that dive into the local ecosystem, history, and wildlife, a cute gift shop where you can pick up some souvenirs, restrooms with flushing toilets, walls covered in murals done by local artists, and even a coffee/tea/hot cocoa station to show how much they care.
There's something really special having Galena Regional park so close by. Every visit seems like a that ideal field trip that no one ever wants to end.

Aside from its cool exhibits, the center also hosts special events throughout the year (like the fall festival & gala fundraiser), and with a couple of picnic tables out front, it’s a great spot to relax, enjoy the scenery, and have a laid back lunch after your visit.

Family Friendly Trails
Here, I’ve highlighted a couple of trails my family and I frequent.
Galena Creek Visitor's Center Nature Trail
This paved trail is right next to the Visitor Center. It’s more of a leisurely stroll, but I visit often during fall to enjoy the changing aspens along the creek. The bridge adds a bit of fun, and the paved path makes it super accessible for everyone. It’s a great spot to relax, soak in the beauty of the area, and enjoy local happenings.
Jones Loop
Jones Loop (1.5 miles, 259 ft. elevation gain) is short and sweet with much to offer. There’s a little climb at the beginning of the trail, but it’s enjoyable, featuring beautiful views and soothing sounds from the creek that runs parallel. You can complete the loop or branch out to more difficult trails like the Jones Whites Creek Loop (10 miles, 2,450 ft. elevation gain). Even just the first quarter mile of Jones Whites offers stunning views.
Nature Trail by the South Entrance
I’ve hiked this trail countless times, and its magic never gets old. The trailhead is right next to the south entrance parking lot, where you’ll be greeted by the soothing sounds of the roaring creek as soon as you open your door. Hike a couple of minutes up the main path and you’ll reach a bridge with stunning views of the creek. Just across the bridge, you’ll find the well marked loop trail that includes 18 interpretive plaques that make the hike both educational and enjoyable.
Bonuses: restrooms with running water & flushing toilets, picnic tables with BBQ grills, a fun right creek next to the parking lot ideal for water play, and nearby Marilyn’s Pond a couple of mins up the street.
Tip: Bring a good book and relax on a bench by the bridge and creek. To find the parking lot for this trail, search "Galena Hatchery" on Google and park in the first lot upom entering.
Other Highlights
Galena Fish Hatchery (reservations for events)
The Galena Fish Hatchery is often overlooked since many visitors enter the park from the other side where the Visitor Center is located. I absolutely love this part of the park because it’s scenic and fun to explore. From the main parking lot just off the main street, you can hike up to the fishing pond, past multiple parking lots, all the way to Camp WeChMe (where children meet), making for a nice well rounded adventure. Alternatively, you can drive a little ways up from the first parking lot to Marilyn’s Pond (stocked 1 acre. 10ft deep pond), Galena Hatchery, and the Camp WeChMe. Limited parking at each lot. Fishing permits required.
Creek Next to the Parking Lot (South Entrance)
I’ll never forget the first time I opened my car door on my first visit to this park and instantly heard the soothing sounds of the creek. It's such a fun hidden spot that's fun to splash around and explore nature. There are multiple shaded shallow streams that branch off from the main one and make for a beautiful scene. I encountered a fly fisherman here one visit who demonstrated his fishing skills for me and the kiddos. It was one of the raddest encounters and a distinctly Reno kind of moment that I cherish every day. P.S. Don't forget the Crocs.
Note: I love bringing my kiddos to Galena Regional Park on hot days because it’s always a few degrees cooler in Reno.
The Lodge Bar & Patio
How often can you enjoy all the comforts and joys of life in a stunning forest setting with mountain views? Not often, but in Reno, OFTEN, LOL.
The Lodge is one of my absolute favorite local businesses in Reno conveniently located right off Mt. Rose Highway just before the entrance to Galena Park Visitor's Center that offers amazing year round entertainment, cocktails, wine, brew, espresso drinks, non caffeinated drinks, breathtaking views, food, excellent service, workshops, holiday markets, and so much more. Since my first visit many years ago, the owners, Carly & Leah, have treated my family & I like royalty. You really can't beat the views of the evergreens and Mt. Rose outside the windows and everything else this place has to offer.

-The owner, Carly, and her twin sister, Leah, are among my favorite people in Reno. Their warmth, humor, and genuine attentiveness make every visit a pleasure.
