Hey Friends,
Has anyone else noticed the record breaking, summer-like temperatures lately... in SPRING?!? I most certainly have. June’s average temperature in Reno is about 69°F, with a high of 85°F & a low of 53°F, yet we’ve frequently seen temperatures nearing 100 °F at the end of May. To my recollection, these kind of temps usually make an appearance for a brief time at the peak of every summer.
And that storm on Saturday (6/21) that I'm pretty sure you've been seeing all over your social media feed. I happened to be in Virginia City at the time and caught some snowfall. What a summer solstice, huh? In places of high elevation, weather just doesn't always follow the script.
Now, getting back to summer. It’s going to be a hot one, based on AccuWeather: sustained 90s and upper 80s are expected all throughout the season, with temperatures finally dipping into the 70s by late September. That might be great news for sun lovers, but not so great for those who melt in the heat.
The trick is knowing where to go to cool down when summer gets unbearable. Luckily, Reno’s full of hidden escapes - high elevation hikes, shaded parks, creeks & splash pads for the kids, quick Lake Tahoe getaways, and of course, icy treats and eats that help keep you sane.
Summers in Reno and the surrounding areas are loaded with life - festivals, events, farmer's markets, food truck nights, workshops & classes, art, music, and so much more. Below, you'll find a curated list of events, many beloved local favorites, to help you make the most of the season.
Some events have limited tickets (especially with our growing population), so if something catches your eye, snag those spots asap. Also, stay tuned as I update my list throughout the summer with events I've missed or pop up at later times. For those who like to plan ahead, check out my more comprehensive list of events on the right side of this blog.
Many of these events and activities are free and open to the public, offering unique experiences you won't find just anywhere. And with our town centered around a river and such diverse landscapes, there are endless possibilities for adventures, whether you stay close or venture out. Your only homework is to get out there and have some fun. I'll take care of the rest.
P.S. This post is a reflection of my love for our amazing city and the people that make it rad. In other words, it's not sponsored - just shared with love.
Peace, Love, & Kindness,
Kat

-Reno's Summer Festivals: We have tons to enjoy. Biggest Little Wing Festival, Northern Nevada Pride, Artown, Hot August Nights, The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off, to name a few.

Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair (60 miles east)
*Location:
325 Sheckler Rd Fallon,
Churchill County 89406 USA
If you're into mini road trips, small town charm, homegrown cantaloupes, variety shows, & more, Fallon's annual Cantaloupe Festival is the place to be.
Is it always blazing hot around the time of the festival? Yes, BUT there's something at the festival to counter that - CANTALOUPE ice cream!
Growing up in a Filipino household I had cantaloupes on a regular basis, kind of like how Americans have bananas. And It was only until I grew up that I realized that cantaloupes in America were usually enjoyed as is, but nice and chilled.
In my house, I had them shredded in fruit waters, blended into smoothies, and made into what Filipinos called "Ice Candy," a blended cantaloupe/sugar/milk/condensed milk mixture poured & frozen in little long plastic baggies - a popsicle-like treat, just without the stick.
Friends, Fallon's cantaloupe ice cream is made using homegrown cantaloupes. Me finding this treat is like miners finding gold, LOL. If I had a golden nugget and someone offered the last serving of cantaloupe ice cream for it, I would gladly give it up.
Besides the ice cream and fresh cantaloupes that leak out onto your chopping board, I enjoy Fallon's efforts in including a little bit of everything for everyone - pig races, a small, interactive & educational exhibit, carnival, vendors, eats, entertainment, and even a rodeo.
There's this entertainer named Sam Malcom who performs at the festival every year. He's a Fallon local, and one of the most hilarious & talented performers that I enjoy watching every single year. His variety show is impressive because he weaves humor into it, most of which is tailored for adults. If you make it out this year, make sure to check out his show & brace yourself for a hilarious ride (appreciates & accepts donations - cash and Venmo accepted). Schedule: 8/23 @ 9pm, 8/24 @ 4pm, 8/25 @ 11am.

Nevada Fine Arts has been a cultural hub in Reno since 1973... that's long before I was born! LOL. When a business has been running for that long, it's definitely a good sign. Truth be told - it’s the local shop you need in your life. It’s got all the supplies, the teachers, and the creative vibes you want in a true art community.
And the people here are Grade A. They’re always ready to help, offer some direction, or just say hey. Seasoned or aspiring artist, you have to visit this place.
And if you're someone who wants to pass your craft on to others, definitely talk to them about teaching a class. They love supporting local talent.
Fun fact: if you check out their events page, you’ll see Luna, my 10 year old, & her portrait of our dog, Gunther (15 yrs.), front and center on the cover of their “Sketching Animal Portraits for Beginners” class. I still can’t believe how amazing her portrait turned out, thanks to her instructor, Victoria. Absolutely priceless.
