If fairies were real, this is exactly where you’d find them.
Lush green grass, a winding dirt trail weaving through towering, whimsical trees, moss covered rocks, a creek with an inviting stone pathways, and lots of atmosphere is what you can expect on this trail. It's one of those places that just put a smile on your face.
One weekend, my family and I visited BOA Vista Orchards (about 2 hrs. from Reno) for one of their themed foodie festivals - I think it might have been the cherry one. BOA Vista is the only year-round farm on Apple Hill - a collection of about 50+ farms that open every fall and provide all things fall related, including, but not limited to - apple goods, apple ciders, apple donuts, U-pick apple experiences, bakeries galore, hay rides, gem mining, fun mazes, and so much more.
Somehow, one of my kid's shoes got left behind back in Reno (not an unusual problem in the world of parenting)... an hour and a half away in Reno, LOL. The nearest store with shoes my son's size was located in Folsom (36 mins. away), so off I went. If you know anything about me, you'll know how I love making the best of any situation. I thought it would be fun to embark on a local adventure while in the area (why not), which brought me to this family friendly trail - Hinkle Trail - a hike that Google led me to right after I bought some replacement shoes.
I had no knowledge about Folsom prior to my first visit many years ago. Let's just say that I'm glad I forgot my son's shoes since Folsom ended up being a super cool and charming town. It has so much natural beauty, good eats & drinks, novelty shops, shopping malls, a historical part of town that's an amazing attraction on its own, and so much more. You don’t just stumble upon places like this every day.
Hinkle Creek Trail is a 1 mile loop sitting on 36 acres of beautiful open space. Half of the trail winds through grass and trees, while the other half follows a paved path back to the parking lot.
Near the trailhead, you’ll find a nature center where you can learn about local wildlife, plants, and educational programs in the area. There’s also seating at the start of the trail and by the nature center, making it a great spot for a picnic. One of my favorite discoveries on our adventure was discovering a makeshift fairy garden located near the beginning of the trail.
*If visiting during winter, be sure check the weather & road conditions ahead of time, particularly for snow on Donner Pass, one of the highest points on the 80 from Reno to Folsom. Similarly, if taking Highway 50, check conditions at Adventure Mountain, South Lake Tahoe. In the past, snow storms have gotten so bad to the point of freeway closure
*Looking for more nearby fun? The Folsom Zoo and Folsom Valley Railway can be found nearby (both excellent attractions).
